Photograph someone or something that can represent the spirit of a country creatively. For example, it is a stereotype using an eagle as a symbol of USA. However, challengers could photograph something else to represent the spirit of USA instead of an eagle.

I think this challenge is tough but meaningful and intresting. Hope to see some amazing photos in such a challenge.

This is a good challenge, and Ive been thinking about suggesting something similar... like photographing something that shows your culture... like in Canada: the maple leaf, street hockey, eh!

Now why couldn't we have this in January when the Olympic torch relay comes through my neck of the woods? ;o)

Hmm...first there was Your Corner of the World, then 47 Steps, now this challenge...anyone else see a pattern here?

Good point Snafster :) - But note that you can pick any country you like. It doesn't have to be your own...

Spirit of Norway? Mountains, moose, brown kinda cheese, cows, guy in corpse paint. Finally I find it hard to choose what challenge to choose; this one or centered composition. We have no beer here though, only sour milk with a picture of russian folklore dancer on which we use on cereals and things like that

As a matter if fact you can find "Erdinger" and a few other German beers at the LCBO. Word of warning though, they aren't as good as the product you get in Germany.

Please do not prepare spaghetti or pizza to photograph, are mine!

I just could not photograph the Mafia, would be a bit risky, okay anyway?

;-)

Yes, you might truly win a "posthumous" award with that. :-)

I'm not complaining (really!), but this baffled me a bit. So essentially this explanation includes the stereotype as a way of demonstrating what *not* to do, right?

I also suspect that they'll be another swath between those who read the fine print (avoid the cliché) and those who only read the Challenge Name (here come the eagles in front of American flags!).

Not sure what you are asking, but the eagle typically is a symbol for the US. Photographing it would not be dnmc.

The description goes on to say photographers *could* (not have to) photograph something else.

Or am I misunderstanding you totally?

No, I think I'm the one who was misunderstanding. Thanks for pointing out it says "could" (not "must"). So the emphasis is on "symbol for a country" -- whether one's subject is common or not is up to the individual photographer.

Texas is it's own country. I'm heading to the stockyards for some more shots of cowboys and longhorn steers.

Aaaarrgghhh! The day before this challenge was announced I did a photo session that was perfect for this. A couple of those shots definitely would have been contenders.

Oh well, there's always the free study for the month.

As a matter of fact Erdinger is not german beer either, it's bavarian. ;-)
And I'll be really pissed off if a see a single Lederhose or Dirndl in the challenge to represent Germany...
