One of my comments was a fairly harsh one, albeit not entirely untrue, from someone with a 4.4 received average.....

Gotta love it.....

It's easy to blow such opinions off, however, identifying what they don't like about yours is part of how that person is improving their own photography. (As if I'm telling you something you don't already know.)

My own is still floating around in the high mediocre range. I had hoped it would do a bit better, but popular appeal is a fickle thing. Only one very minor critique that I consider a personal preference thing tells me that this is pretty darn good for something that originated as a snapshot.

Yeah.....I would have hoped it was for their benefit.....as I said, it's not entirely untrue, I was just sort of surprised to see a comment such as that from someone whose stats indicate someone who doesn't seem to be very much involved.

No big thing, and I'd rather have a comment that makes me look more critically at my own image than none at all.

I'll just cry myself to sleep tonite......8>)

I guess for a rookie this is not to bad. this is only my second picture I have put in. My first one I got like 4.0 it was bad. I see looking at everybody's pictures it sure helps to get better and learn how to take better pictures. Just in a few months I have been on here I have learned alot of new ideas. Thanks to everyone on here.

To be fair, when someone I am not familiar with comments, the first thing I tend to look at is their own average. Looking at that, as well as the rest of their profile, gives me some idea of what level of experience they are coming from. If I receive a harsh comment from a high school kid who appears to be doing DPC as a class assignment, and then a positive comment from a multi ribbon winner with a 6+ average, it does make a difference. On the other hand, a critique from an active member who appears to be struggling to hit the 5's tells me something else.

BTW, my 9 year old grandaughter has critiqued most of the photos on DPC as "boring".

Speaking for myself, when I receive an interesting (positive OR negative) comment from a voter I don't "know", I go their profile and check 'em out. But I don't check average score received, I just look at whatever pictures s/he has in the profile.

Only here at DPC. Somewhere else, that photo would be gold, who knows. ;\

I go look at the profile, and check the level of participation.....whether it's a user or a member, how long they've been around, how many challenges they've entered, their own scores & scoring habits......

It's really for my own sense of how much credence I want to accord the comment.

I will take the comment at face value initially, but bad OR good......I still want to try and get a handle on who the person is, DPC-wise.

I get comments from people here on DPC that I would give equivalent value to regardless of the score because of my respect for them as knowledgeable photogs.......even if it was a critical comment and the ONLY critical one.

So, yeah.......I'm going to be surprised if I get a harsh comment from someone who has been around for two years, has entered two challenges and not done very well, and hasn't really commented much......and because of that, I won't give it as much credence as I would from someone who's been here two years, entered 94 challenges, has an average score in the 5s, and has been a consistent participant.

And as I stated before, which seems to be getting overlooked......the comment's not so far off base.
