Original thread

Well for those who remember, I entered a photo in a contest and was chosen as one of the top 50 images, out of 2500! The top photos were to be exhibited at one on Montreal's museums in the city. Tonight was the opening. The mayor was there, as well as several of the city's hierarchy. Overall a nice event.

Unfortunately, the people involved in the printing of the images are dopes!

Many different kinds of images were submitted: traditional (film and slide), BW, and digital. The guy who was responsible for the digitals decided it was better (and maybe cheaper) to NOT send them to a photo lab. Instead, he printed them on a inkjet printer, and didn't even use the highest quality. End result: ALL the digital images (including mine) look really pixelated, and pretty much crap. All the traditional images look great, were printed in 11x14 and the digitals were printed just barely bigger than a 5x7, but not as big as a 8x12.

I'm so disappointed.

What BS! Did you say anything?

Edit: Your shot is excellent and deserves to be displayed properly.

It's supposed to show your photo along with the others so that people can see how good they are. If they all have horrible quality, that sort of ruins the point of having an exhibition. If you can't see a photo at its best, it's not so great to look at

I never saw the original post, but congratulations

I thought most contest requires that you make your own prints. Paper, processing, etc everything would be photographers' responsiblity.

That truly sucks.

That sucks. The guy was probably a film snob. No offense to those who like film better.

Just reading about it torques me. I would have pulled my photo and left. I can be pretty verbal and everyone in the building would have known why I was upset!
Great photo, btw.

I live about 5 minutes from "La maison du Brasseur", i'll go and take a look at your work for sure.

And since I don't have a picture there, (didn't know about the contest, doesn't meen I would have won though :p) i'll tell them how bad quality they are.

Hey mariomel, you don't happen to know the e-mail addy of the guy who thought your photo was only worthy of inkjet printing? Just put it up in this thread so we can all let him know what we think about his dissing digital.

There were many shots that were shot in digital. I'd say about half, maybe a little more. It was really easy to tell the digitals from the film prints, because of the crappy printing.

I submitted a print to the contest as well as the digital file. When they announced the exhibit, and notified photographers with the top 50, they asked for the negative (or file) in order to make new prints for the exhibit (I guess the ones voted on must have been handled too much).

Me and some of the other photogrpahers were talking about the lack of attention the digi photos received in printing, when low and behold, the guy in question comes up and starts speaking with us. When we found out it was him, we grilled him on why he had done it that way. He said that that was how he was told to do it, and that he had used the only equipment he had at his disposal. Claimed he was a "graphic artist" and said that the untrained eye would not notice the difference.

I guess it's official. I have a trained eye. Cause I NOTICED!

Still nice to be shown in a public exhibit and have people asking questions on how the shots was achieved, etc. Just wish it could be up to my own standards.

As for the booze, just some cheap red wine (from a box) and not enough to get drunk.

@ Denis: very funny. I'll memorize that speach and try it out next time I see the guy. LOL! Even if I'm sober!

There's supposed to be a link to the photos on the city of Montreal's website. When I find it, I'll post it here.

Thanks for the support, and sorry for the RANT.

I'd be sooooooo angry with that guy and whoever put the show together. What were they thinking! I'm steamed just reading about it.
Beautiful picture, btw. the bastids. Guess all the harm has been done already, but you might ask if you can replace his crappy print with one you have printed up.
