Well, it was early a week last Monday morning that I realised my mistook in the centered challenge. After a couple of beers I decided I didn't like a 'hot spot' in the image so I just cloned it out. Boy was that stupid - of course, it looked ok on my pc otherwise I would not have submitted. By the time I got to work I'd had several comments about strange marks on the left of the Tulip. Considering the mess I made I reckon the picture scored quite well but maybe many people have dark monitors too (I even got 1 ten!).

My Q is simple, here is the original with nothing but resizing. I'd like to know if you would have scored it any higher than the submitted version? (as is or cropped as the submission was).

Needless to say I've improved my monitor somewhat and can now see the error of my ways at home.

btw, a special thank-you to laurielblack for mentioning she would not add to the increasing list of comments on my ps skills :)

I liked your submission, and totally missed the errror. But the original is all around better IMHO. I am so very happy to know that other people make these last minute errors that the rest of the world never misses except yourself! LOL

i like the submitted photo better, making it square and cloning out the bright background elements are both good ideas. i will go the laurielblack route and not add to your cloning commentary and just tell you i gave you a 5. i think the shot is lovely and would have done well...

best regards,

Original is better

Official Recommendation: Don't drink and clone!

I really liked your shot and wondered how you missed the clone marks..thanks for the explanation.
I gave it a 6 because of the distracting marks but would have scored it an 8 or 9 without them.

Thanks for your responses, I guess I can put the low score down to my own stupidity, I like the pic I should have submitted so am happy :)

I LOVE the original. I'll add that comment, if you'd like! :o)

I gave it a 5 and commented why. Drinking and cloning kills over 50 shots in the USA each day, just don't do it (US DOT statistics;). I would have scored the original 2 points higher, since I dunned you for the circles of shame.

your cloning has to be worse than whatever you removed, great light and color on the tulip, but you will loose more points doing bad repairs than none at all.

Brennan, thanks for the comment, this is the sort of comment that I feel helps people. You understood my mistook and went on to give the good points of the picture - thanks again.

Laurie, thanks for the challenge comment and on the original pic :)

I'm so glad you explained what happened here! It looked like a nice shot, but I was very confused as to why someone would leave that editing in. Mystery solved!

Feeling like a newby here... isn't cloning against the rules? I hate to admit but I'm having some trouble fully understanding the rules. I'm almost afraid to do anything besides sharpening to my image before submitting it to a challenge. Is cloning okay? Ann

Yes in advance challenge only, but remember which challenge the entry is being entered in. As a couple DQ'd have happened because people forgot :(

To be very honest, I find the background distracting anyway and am wondering whether you could have avoided the need for cloning in the first place by moving around and choosing a different viewpoint with a better background.
