a lady wants me to take photographs in her shop with a view to using some of the images in the website which is currently under construction ..
i have no idea on the pricing ..
do i charge her for my time taking the photographs and then a fee for each photograph she ends up using ..?
or just an amount for the whole shebang .. & if so how do i decide how much to charge her ..?
also any suggestions on copyright, rights reserved etc ..
thankyou in advance ..!!

it's a bit different, but today I did a shoot for a guy applying to a craft guild (he needed shots of his "craft").

I simply charged a flat rate (it was about an hour shooting), and this covered shooting, processing, etc. I had offered him a CD of the images, but after discussion, it was decided to buy the prints from my website.

like i said, kinda like comparing apples to oranges, but they are both fruits, sort of. :P

thanx karma .. i know each photographer would think he or she is worth a certain amount per hour ..
but ball park .. per hour .. what do you reckon would be reasonable .. ?..:)

I would say $25 - 50 USD/hour, but I'm sure there are others on here that would say that is too low (and it may very well be).

still not sure if i should just charge her for the pics she uses rather than an hourly rate .. and if i charge her for the pics then what would be a reasonable price to charge ..?? :)

I've done shots for websites and always found it best to charge a project fee for the whole thing but set limits. I charged an average of $250 for about 2-3 hours of shooting and 2-3 hours of editing which yielded about 15-20 really good photos to use. Worked out to about $50/hr. If I was trying to make a living at it, that wouldn't cut it, but it helps augment my real business income. If you charge for pics, that will usually influence her to buy & use less, IMO. Hope that was helpful.

Over here I find that clients prefer to have a flat rate for everything i.e. include the photo shoot price in the web development fee. The second they see a seperate charge for photography or per image they baulk and haul out their own P&S and tell me they will send me the photos...I try and explain that I will then have to do PP on their images and that it will cost about the same if I did it.
I generally take quick photos of the lodge/business/product on my 1st meeting so that I can send them a URL link to my draft of their new home page with my own work, make it stunning and then they realise thier P&S just wont cut it...

I thus get about $5 per photo and about 25 out of 100 photos taken on the website. Clients can then upload thier own P&S images into a gallery or article themselves thereafter. My goal is to achieve longevity with a client and word of mouth business from them with new clients so I am flexible on pricing.

I haven't had enough to do with the business side of photography to offer any useful advice, but good luck with it Roz. I hope it goes well for you! :)

Since there's no material costs involved it's really just a matter of figuring out how long the job will take and how much your time is worth.

thanks everyone for the input ..
i've asked the lady to put me onto the guy whos building the website to see if he has any idea of how much a photographer would charge for supplying the pics ..
the suggestion of not charging for each pic is wise .. just a set amount for the job ..
deciding on that amount when its the first time is not easy, altho i'd be inclined to charge less rather than more .. i reckon the customer is more likely to tell other ppl about me if they are happy and satisfied with the work and dont feel overcharged .. :)

people don't feel overcharged when they are happy and satisfied. just meet or exceed their expectations and everyone should be happy.

i can't hammer home enough how important it is to find out up front what the client's expectations are in terms of deliverables and costs. if they don't have a budget idea, then they have no way of valuing the work. you have to keep it simple: what exactly do they want and what are they willing to spend to get it. without that, i can almost promise you that someone is not going to be happy in the end...
