No restrictions on editing for stock photos. Do what ever you can to make them attractive to buyers. I think the term comes from the kind of images an agency or broker (and now websites) would have in stock on hand, as opposed to a buyer having to commision a photographer to go out and shoot specifically for that purchase.

I submitted my initial application I *think* on Tuesday or Wednesday (took me a couple days to upload since I did them in steps). Just got my acceptance email today. The turn around for me was pretty quick.

I got a reply. Too much noise in my images. I think I may have oversharpened. Anyone get this response?

on Istock..I just got a message I got through the application round today, but that my third image was one that wouldn't be approved next time for 'real' uploading..looking again, I think they were right. Now I've uploaded five photos and they say I've reached the limit for today, but in the mail they said I could upload 20 images a day..that's a bit strange.. the pictures of milking are really bright and neat and I think that's why they sell really good..I think other pictures wouldn't... I hope mine will do good, because in a few months I don't have an income anymore because of my intermship and master thesis I have to write during next study year and getting paid for my hobby would be absolutely great! Even if it is not so much..it is always better than 'eating up' all of my savings.. and tomorrow I'll upload five again!!

I received my acceptance e-mail tonight also. 2 day turn around. I just finished uploading my first 4 images, two of which I used for test samples. The 3rd one was a flower picture so I didn't submit it.

I've been reading their message boards and there was a mention that it used to be you could upload 20 a day, then it was reduced to 10. Right now I think they've lowered it (possibly temporarily?) to 5 because of the backlog of images waiting for inspection/approval.
I'm looking over a few more images to upload myself, I did two of the ones I selected for my application, unsure on whether I should do the third.
Good luck on yours!

Thank you for the help. I signed up today too, why not make some money on images that will just sit on your HD???? |

Dreamstime seems to keep their backlog at a minimum for approving images, but it has been a bit slow for the last two days or so. Their 'counters' are not working properly either. My counters are currently showing less photos than I have actually uploaded and my sales dollar figure doesn't match the number of images I have sold (even though the 'error' seems to be in my favor)...
iStockphoto does have a deep backlog of approving images. I haven't had anything approved yet and I started uploading images (5 per day limit) three days ago...

Well, I have to take back what I said. Although the prices do seem somewhat rediculously low, I think I'm going to give it a try. I had never considered only submitting images that I don't think I'll ever print or submit elsewhere, so I guess some of my lesser shots will be going up. |

I've made my first 1.50 on stock photography. lol I like it! I stopped uploading cuz I want to make sure I upload some good images now. I'm going to resume uploading when my edits are complete on these images. I sold 3 of the SAME photo - an alternate to my Godot shot. Maybe I uploaded the WRONG one!!

Only $5.00 to go and I'll be getting my 4th $100 check from istockphoto. Anyone want to check out my pictures there and download one? ;)
Yes, they're definitely slow doing approvals. I imagine Dreamstime will become the same way at some point, when more photographers have discovered it and are uploading there.
I do notice goofy descrepancies between istockphoto and Dreamstime... I'll upload the same small versions of my photos and one place will reject one that the other will accept. I actually stopped submitting to istockphoto for a while because it was so discouraging when what I knew was a good shot would get rejected. This week, this shot:
got rejected with a note saying it was "out of focus". I know the back corners are out of focus, but they're *supposed to be* - it's a background photo and all that space is meant for text. Yeesh. I think they get so backlogged that when they're approving they tend to be rather hit and miss on what they accept and what they don't accept. It doesn't bother me anymore, but I'm just trying to make a point for those of you who get photos rejected - don't be discouraged. Just keep on uploading. :) Soon you'll be getting your fourth $100 check, too.

Jodie, do they automatically cash you out at $100 or can you let it build up? |

You can let it build up. You need to e-mail them after you reach the $100 mark before they'll send you a check. And I think they only send them in $100 increments. Once I had about $120 or so build up, e-mailed them and asked for my check, and in about a week the check showed up for $100 and my account balance had dropped to $20.

I just hope I have half as much luck with it as you do :) I don't normally shoot with 'stock use' in mind and a majority of my photos won't make particularly good stock. If sales are decent over time tho, it would make a good 'piggy bank' for buying new toys :)

so they don't like a small DOF at Istock?? hm...then all my photos will be rejected..I have uploaded my first photos (15 ones of them, since I can indeed make only five uploads a day) and they're still pending..but I must expect them to be rejected then...too bad...I always like a smaller DOF than the whole picture..it gives that little something extra I think most of the times...blegh I hate rejections ;)

No, that's not really it. I have tons of pictures there with a small DOF. I meant to say that sometimes you submit perfectly good pictures and they reject them for reasons that make little sense and you just need to expect it, not take it too personally and keep trying. Most of the time they have over 1000 images in their queue waiting for approval, and I think their photo inspectors just get overwhelmed and reject stuff that really isn't bad at all, because they're in a hurry trying to push pictures through the queue.
Or maybe that's what I tell myself so that I don't take it so personally when they reject stuff? ;)

Try resubmitting one that got rejected and see what happens...

I did that, Setz. It got HAMMERED in the re upload. The guy found THREE more problems in addition to the ONE reject reason.
*sigh*

I'm not an inspector, nor do I play one on TV, but as a web designer, the problem with that sort of focus is that the photographer decided where everything would go. It is of pretty limited use because you can't use the negative space on the left as well and the image feels 'off balance' with just the top out of focus and the bottom sharp.
*shrug* But what do I know? (nothing!)

iStock got around to looking at my first upload... it was rejected for noise... lol. |

Their review process is a bit arbitrary. I submitted 6 images of a series, all with same lighting and smae processing. Two were rejected because of noise, one because of artifacts, two because my wife signed the release form and they thought I did it myself and one was accepted. I had to resubmit the other ones with a new release form and got accepted.

Use a program called Neat Image to fix that problem

Thats what everyone keeps saying but it simply isn't possible to 'fix' noise in a lot of photographs. |
