There's a thread at dpreview, forums, news discussion. For me, short on wolf lore, the kicker is the background which turns out to be awfully darn close to the one in the tamed(?) wolf preserve where, marvel of marvels, exists a remarkably similar wolf.

Not really the best wildlife or even pseudo wildlife shot, but great kitsch appeal. Not that kitsch hasn't it place, but I prefer kitsch with a bit of humour, and possibly danger, as in Art's version.

The look on the pig's face is priceless!

What, what! Are you saying that this perfectly verifiable (or is that certifiable) image is questioned as to its veracity? Surely not.

Consider the source!

(sigh) Dang, A. Roflmao, it's good to see you back.

This should stand as a prime example of why shots should not be staged for our "Portrait of a Wild Bird" challenge.

Look what can happen, loss of $10K, international condemnation. DNMC.

It's not worth it, don't fake your bird shot!

Keep the birds real!

Reading is good...saves time and energy. In this day and age of global warming and holes in the ozone (why haven't we heard about the ozone layer lately? Did someone put a band-aid on the hole in it so it would stop leaking atmosphere?) we could use some basic rote to get our spirits flowing and blood boiling for fear of not being able to recite properly.

I'll leave the unspoken up to you to decipher.

ETA: Love the pic Ken!

Oh great, first a Fairytale Storybook Wolf that is indeed doing unlikely things like a wolf in a storybook might do. Then CEJ goes all cryptic and Da Vinci Code on us, and Art Roflmao reappears.

What could possibly happen next?!

So any more news on the apparently agility-trained 'wild' wolf?

Stripped of his award.

Naughty, naughty...I was thinking the flying pig was more plausible. :P

Having to give back £10.000 must be a bit of a pain. I would have spent it by now. I'm sure he has a shiny lens or two he's got attached to by now.

I was hoping the image of all the starlings below it here would replace it.

Oh, yes indeed. That photograph is stunning and, in my view, far better than the wolf, tame or not. Also like the cat vs fox.

Who said he has to give it back, I did not see that in the artilce? In any case if they had already paid him I doubt they will ever collect.

I was wondering why they couldn't make someone else the winner. that could very well by why.

That's what I thought as well. So in the end, the flying wolf man has the last laugh. Muwahahaha!

The article i read before seeing this thread mentioned him being stripped of his £10.000 prize. You're right though. I can't see how they can reclaim it easily.

It may not be "easy" but I suspect the possible threat of being charged with criminal fraud might provide some incentive.

Even worse, they could DNMC him!

Apparently the wolf photographer had only received a sort of advance on the prize money. - It seems very odd that they wouldn't automatically adjust the rankings and prizes.

What also seems odd is that although the wolf pic is a cute "storybook" shot, it really seems nothing more than that unless one is prepared to believe it to be "wild," and then it would be like the dog who stands on two legs - applauded not because he does it well but because he does it at all - and I find this really depressing.

The second place photo, on the other hand, is a beautiful amazement. Hard to believe it was in the same soup bowl.

Well, at least now the zoo housing the wolf can make a few $$, if they sell postcards of the wolf doing his agility-dog thang...
