However, even I *eventually* clued in, and as I've mentioned, I visited his site shortly before his trip to Ethiopia last year. In his bio, at that time, there was no mention of DPC, which I thought puzzling, as by then I had discovered his portfolio and yes, faved a bunch of his pics.

So I am not trying to slag the man by any means, I was simply wondering aloud why he didn't mention DPC on his site. I had no idea some might consider him to be DPC property.

It would be really useful, imho, if someone truly in the know posted a Dummies Guide to Joey Lawrence and DPC forum, so noobs and clueless types like myself have some idea as to the history here.

I'm not sure why he would list DPC on his webiste..... Is that professional ????? What if he also belonged to several other photog webistes while developing his talent.. Wouldn't he then have to mention them all... I mean, really.. DPC can't take responsibility for JoeyL... Do any other hugely successful photog's mention DPC on their websites.. don't think so.

I think DPC is the only one that clubbed together to buy him a camera.. or am I mistaken on that one?

That's my point precisely!!! From what very little I know, Joey joined DPC when he was in his early teens. His pix improved, he began to do well and win challenges...and then the hat got passed and DPC bought, or helped him buy, his first ever DSLR. Then he got an agent in Toronto, and an agent in London, shot in Ethiopia, shot the Twilight poster, etc and now he's making a name for himelf in NY. I am aware of all the Joey-bashing too, but am opposed to it and not interested in getting involved in that crap.

So, DPC...can we please have an *official* version of Joey's past here at DPC? I am not trying to stir things up, just satisfy the curiousity of myself, and others, and get the most accurate version of events.

He came, he saw, he did Twilight.

In all honesty though: I have no idea if his camera was DPC-provided or not. I know he used a Dimage7 or something for a while, then got a 5d, sold all his zooms, did a lot of (very good) band pics, went to India when the snowball was rolling downhill and now he's a bit of a monster.

Beyond that I just know he's a good guy with good talent and one day I'll buy him a beer for selling me his lenses at super cheap prices :)

DPC????? bought him a camera or someone on DPC donated a camera to him... Huge difference there.. I wasn't here when that was done, but again.. I still don't see the connection between Joey giving props to this website for the generosity of one or even many members.. If anything, those props should go to the ones who specifically helped him.. Not DPC... All I'm saying is that why would you question him NOT mentioning DPC no matter what the previous relationship is..that's all.. it just seems unprofessional to me for him to be listing random websites he used to be active on when clearly he's trying to portray a professional photographer who IS still looking for the next gig..

It didn't even cross my mind that he might mention dpc on his site. Honestly, I think the fact that he was once a prominent member of an online photo community has nothing to do with work he wants to show prospective clients, and it really doesn't strike me as professional either.

As per my recollection, Joey did partially fund the purchase of a video camera with money acquired by selling his editing dvd. But that was in no way charity, and he doesn't "owe" this site anything.

This is a great site, and I love stopping in from time to time to discuss technology and technique, but this and the enthrallment I had with the community 5 years ago won't require me to put dpchallenge on my resume.

Definitely that was not me. Thank you for the kind words though! =)

i was in a taxi today and i saw a billboard with joey's photos on it. it made me so happy for him, and it terrified me. my big goal as a photographer is to have my work on a billboard. and i realized today that in order to accomplish that, i need to be as good as joey. wow, no pressure right?

Hey, that ain't true. *Most* billboard photography isn't particularly outstanding :-)

Joey switched up from his 1.3 MP camera in July, 2005, about a month before I came. I do not remember a collection for him, but I could be wrong. Perhaps people are confusing when we chipped in to get hotpasta a replacement after his harrowing adventure on the beach?

Robert might remember whether someone in specific or people in general helped Joey out.

There were a couple folks in specific that helped Joey with gear, and others that took him under their wing from a mentoring point of view. I don't feel right naming names in this thread. If they want to be talked about in that context, I'm sure they will volunteer the information.

i dunno - but his persistent photographic drive might have been what got him where he is. despite some folks around these parts helping him out.

leave the BS to the bulls, and we might keep another talented photographer around these parts.

Regardless of what he received as a gift form the group or individual(s), it is up to Joey to decide on the way he will express his gratitude. It is ridiculous to expect or even suggest that he owes the site anything beyond what he feels he does. Read his post a couple of pages behind, this is part of it and in my opinion it is a great testimonial to the site:

"DPChallenge is a great environment to learn. I have met some great friends on this website that I stay in touch with to this day. I'd really like to enter a challenge again for the fun of it."

Agreed.

I saw a book(let) in a newsagents today. Twilight something-or-other. I'm pretty sure it's the film thing for which Joey got the job of shooting the poster. I took a peek and saw picture credits inside the back cover. I was thinking I might see Joey's name there. There were a lot of pictures and they were credited by being listed as page numbers in three groups under their respective agencies. No Joey Lawrence name, so I thought either a) he gets an agency to handle secondary use, b) he's too expensive so they (I'm thinking maybe 'they' is an outsourced mob producing this sort of pulp) get a mess of shots at lowest rates, c) he's been done.

Joey did the Posters for the movie. Here's a link to the MTV movies blog.

You're probably thinking "Twilight: New Moon." He didn't do the photos for the sequel, just the first one.

*AHEM* This one seems aimed at me. I never felt 'seriously jilted' that he didn't mention this site on his webpage at the time that I saw it which was probably well over a year ago by now. AT THAT TIME, I noticed in his bio that there was no mention of DPC. Seemed to me that DPC had been a huge influence. OK, perhaps I'm wrong, I well could be! Maybe he does now have a tip of the hat DPC-wise on his webpage!
For f**k's sake, people, at least read the damn thread! gawd!
