For those who have placed their work on Exhibitions.
What are the photos that sell the most on Exhibitions?
Here are the choices I have:
Landscapes
Architecture
Animals
Abstract
People/Portraits
I am thinking of leaning towards the Architecture, Landscapes and Animals mostly and place a couple of people/Portraits with some abstracts.

personally, I don't have any experience with exhibitions, but would tend to agree with your line of thinking ... if I were going to buy someone's work I would probably lean toward landscape or architecture ... |

I would "show" the portraits/people shots to show that I can do them, but I don't think they would sell. I tend to think that people usually buy pictures of people they know. I could be wrong, though.
The couple of "street fairs" that I did, it was local landscapes that sold well -- typically to the tourists visiting the area. |

Think local - landscapes and buildings of your town sell well. |

looks like Landscapes and Architecture...
I am hoping to at least recoop something from this lol.. So I want to concentrate on what people like to see :)
And throw in some of my favorites as well. |

You may want to include one or two impressive macro shots. Your camo frog with his little spider buddy would be a good one.

Thanks so far I am exhibiting these:
20x30 in a 24x36 frame:
(without the Bars)

I am thinking of posting about 25-30 16x24 photos in 20x30 frames
and about 15-20 12x18 photos in 16x24 frames
The space is huge. My goal is about 50 but I am having a really hard time triming it down to such a number :(

It has been my experience that you cannot predict the whims and tastes of the populace.
Take your best work, and hope for the best.
My only suggestion is that you would listen to what Karma said about your people shots being used as an example of your porttrait abilities.
It's been my experience that if the people are the primary component of an image, unless there's a personal attachment, they are not saleable.
For instance, this image as an example of a Civil War theme, MIGHT sell.
This image IMNSHO would have limited appeal outside of the young lady's immediate family......8>)
Though by no means an expert, after three years of gallery showings & arts/craft shows trying to figure out what people will buy, I have pretty much resigned myself to having *no* idea whatsoever! LOL!!!

I think the simple question is what do most people hang on the average wall?
It's not a question whether the image is good or not but what people want to live with or like to have in sight, all the time. So, the young kid with the blue slushy is nice but who will buy it? I could be very wrong but I don't see that selling. Give it a try.
One suggestion I would make is to keep the prints smaller or at least not monster 38"-40" (on the long side). That will make it easier for people to place in smaller areas/spaces. I also bet a few images converted to B&W might be easier to place than color images, depending on peoples wall/room colors or furniture, etc. Using larger mattes might be a good way to give images an illusion of greater size.
B&W landscapes ot anything artsy, might fly.
This could look very cool printed large.
Check out Peter Lik. You have a few things that could fall into his zone, in terms of color.

You know I lost when my hard drive crashed. I am so ticked off about that still. I really liked that photo.
I had the opportunity to visit Peter Lik's gallery in wakiki. His work is impressive.
I am having the whole building lobby to display my work. I can have up to 15 pillars and wall space to display it.
This is becoming harder than I thought. I hope it gets easier after the selection has been done. ugh... |
