OK, so we agree I have one of the lamest cameras on this site, but I'm trying to use it to the fullest extent possible. I was out tonight trying to capture things for the next two challenges, and was stuck at a railroad crossing and decided to get out of the car and shoot some pictures. Everyone thought I was nuts, but what the heck. :o) Any suggestions on how to improve action shots at dusk with a lame camera?

Did you try panning with the train? |

Yeah, but those turned out pretty bad...I didn't even save any because they were not salvageable. :o(

I like how you managed to capture the perspective of motion in both of these shots and would do very little to them!

My camera is not too good, but imagination is 80% of the photo, camera only do the other 20%, so don't call it "lamest", it will ear you!
In my opinion, you have several choices:
A) Crop out the first vehicle (it moved way too fast for your speed shutter)
B) Zoom in so first vehicle is not in the frame (vehicles behind moves slower from your camera point of view).
C) Do the opposite, get closer to the first vehicle so the feel of speed change from a "bad side effect" to the primary goal of the shoot.
D) Wait an hour or two to the next train ;)
Anyhow, most of the cams around would had give you mostly the same blured first plane... don't worry. |

I've got plans to shoot around town tomorrow afternoon again...I'll be able to catch another train I'm sure. I want to work on panning, so if anything comes out halfway decent, I'll post it so you guys can dissect it for me.
BTW...bitfarmer...I covered my camera's ears before I said that! :o)
