LOL. Any editing program is a POS if you don't know how to use it. ;o) |

I agree that everyone is entitled to their own opinions....but you didn't like it when you thought we were all attacking you verbally. Well I am personally offended with your remark aimed at the industry. You will find very few photographers who don't use an editing programme....so your statement is aimed at all the top notch professional photographers as well as most of the members on this site.
If you don't have anything nice to say...then don't say anything at all. Make your suggestion and leave it at that!!

While I agree the tone of the OP was somewhat inflammatory I can also sympathize.
When I first joined DPC way back when, it was much more a community of amateurs trying to figure out their cameras. The community was smaller and the playing field much leveler. Even as a beginner you knew if you had a good idea for the challenge you had a chance to be competitive.
Well, DPC got bigger and bigger and more and more wonderful, talented people started entering. Their work was inspiring but put us novice/amateur folks at a bigger disadvantage. Now you had to master both your camera and your editing software to be competitive where before you could be proficient in both and it might be "good enough" to be in the running.
I do think that DPC is more about editing in 2009 than it was in 2002 and while I agree that editing is an essential skill for the amateur photographer, I've also been dismayed to see a very well edited picture that really wasn't particularly creative (in terms of it's subject relative to the challenge) beat out a well composed, creative photo that wasn't HDR or flashy.
For the novice, learning what an Fstop is, is hard enough - let alone mastering a powerful and complicated software app like Photoshop. And while my skills as a photographer have definitely improved, in no small part due to having to compete against some very talented people, I do sometimes wish I could be judged more against people at my level. Not everyone gets to play in the Major Leagues but almost anyone can play little league. It can be intimidating and sometimes frustrating being the little league player going up against some of you major leaguers. :)
I don't think a minimalist challenge necessarily levels the playing field but it does take some stress off the newer folks who are trying to juggle two pretty big learning curves.
I've said a few times in the past that I wish DPC had some sort of farm system. Where you'd have to ribbon in Single A to move to Double A, then Triple A, then the Majors, or something like that. It'd be an organizational challenge, and I don't expect it will happen, and I can think of thirty ways it might get abused, but a girl can dream. ;)

shouting aside, it would be quite a cool idea to have 2 challenges maybe for the open challenges both on the same theme but one only minimal and the other advanced editing, actually now thinking about it it would be very cool! |

I find it amusing that it's always someone who is forced to confront their inadequacies that screams the loudest about photographic integrity.
So......you're the man.
After all, your style is the purest & best.
You can demonstrate that with your superior entries.
Show us how it's done.

No, it does not level the playing, and potentially increases the difficulty, particularly for the novice you are referring to who has not explored all the menu options, etc, buried in their hand held computer we now call a DSLR. ;) I like the minimal ruleset because it's a change of pace, not because it eliminates photoshop, etc. I spend a fair amount of time post-processing my BWs, never just one click, so I would find it to be a personal challenge to shoot a BW in camera that I would find satisfying. In the end, the top 20 will likely be many of the photogs who have consistently been there before, because an excellent entry almost always begins with an excellent capture.
So yes, I think we definitely need to see the minimal rule set thrown in periodically, about as often as the advanced rule set for the Open Challenges, or, as suggested by Nikonrich, at the same time; not because it levels the playing field, but because it would be an enjoyable challenge. |

I'm pretty happy with this shot from today....I screened it up and just stared at it amazed, 'cause I didn't want to touch it at all.
I usually do a fair amount of light cleanup on just about every image, but sometimes I do get it right.....

sorry to offend the offensive, i just think that photography has become clouded by how well you can edit the photo, now how well you can take the picture, i just want a chance to see what the photos look like when NO editing is allowed, i know that good pictures can be taken without the use of editing software and i want to see them, all differences and arguments aside, lets have a challenge where you submit the picture you took, not the picture you created
peace and love to all

Obviously you aren't reading all the posts in this thread. You have been told in more than one post, that we already have those types of challenges. They are called MINIMAL EDITING....read the rules on that style of challenge. We are due for one...but please....enough already of this ignorance.

I enjoy minimalist editing, as much as heavily edited images. However to be realistic there really haven't been any straight from the camera images since the advent of the glass plate negative. (With the exception of Polaroid instant pictures.)
As already noted here, many cameras come complete with plenty of in camera effects.
So, if you are really serious about straight from the camera, how about a side challenge of scanned Polaroid prints? Better do it soon though. Polaroid is ceasing production of their films. (Not enough demand for straight from the camera images? ;-)
