300mm f/2.8L IS
handheld at iso400, f/2.8, 1/800 in the shade

this is pretty close to a 100% crop with slight processing.

we'll see how it does this weekend with volleyball, soccer, a road race, football, and more volleyball...

I don't entirely understand... will he be riding along in your camera bag during this weekends adventures?

aha, you are talking about your NEW 300/2.8!

I like your copyright strip -- more legible and less obtrusive than the usual watermark. I didn't see a trademark notice, so I might try something similar myself ... ;-)

Great shots -- how far away were you from the subjects?

Skip, what was the distance between the camera and the frog?

How do you like that lens as compared to the 70-200mm f/2.8L. I have that lens and wouldn't mine getting my hands on that 300 L. Also, do you have the 1.4x or 2.0x extender?

I used to place my watermarks like that, but I found out folks were simply cropping it out and illegally using the photo. That's why I've changed my watermark strategy a bit.

about 10'. i tried to get closer, but i was having a hard time focusing. i think i was right up against the lens's minimum distance ;-)

that is far and away my workhorse lense...until now! i've had the opportunity to shoot with a 300 in the past and it really makes the difference when it comes to sports photography. the 70-200, especially with a 1.4x, will get the job done, but 1) emotion-wise, you're limited unless the action is right on top of you, and 2) it's damn near impossible to use the a TC indoors.

the 300 is HEAVY as a few bricks. i have some friends that shoot with it without a monopod and i marvel at that. i know it's going to take some getting used to shooting action without a zoom, but i'm sure the tradeoffs between what i'm used to and what i'll be capable of will be well worth it.

thanks, and knock yourself out ;-)

i put down a shaped-box fill layer and adjust the opacity on that (usually filled black), and then i put the text layer on top of that and 'usually' adjust down the opacity on that, as well.

Hey Skip looks good, I can't imagine how good your stuff will be now with the beast in your bag. Congrats on the lens.

As suprised as I am to hear that the frog plays contact sports, I am flabbergasted to hear he can drive!

I wouldn't say ALL. There's skill involved too and I'm never quick enough with living things.

oh no, he's not driving...he's hopping!

i grabbed a few more in the kitchen. these were about 15' away, handheld

iso1000, f/2.8, 1/40

the above is a 100% crop of this

iso1000, f/2.8, 1/125

By the way, I've licensed more of my photographs than I ever did once I started using this watermark (see link in the quoted section). I guess when I went without WMs, people felt like they could freely use my images.

i shot a road race this morning; perfect opportunity to check out the new glass...(the inset is a 100% crop of the larger image)

a really good example of the detail the lens captures
