Yup. It's the 10-20mm Sigma for NIKON lens that Vikas recently listed for sale here on dpc. Lucky for me, Ryan saw it and told me about it, and after some thought I got in touch with Vikas and just barely 1 1/2 days later, made the Big Trip over to Ogdensburg UPS and picked it up for approx $400 USD.

So food will be optional for the next month. Oh well! ;-)

That is so cool!! I'm having a blast with mine, but then again, mine's a 10-22 so it must be far superior :P

I'm also having lots of mistakes. Perspective problems indoors and zoomed way out can be very interesting!

I love it. Shot with RayEthier's 10-22mm when he loaned me the Canon, hardly even touched the 28-135 he also loaned me!

Guess I better some images from portfolio...

Today is not my unbirthday. Just sayin.

Umm, in which case I am not wishing you a very happy unbirthday. But am not sure my negatives are doubled enough so instead will quietly, out of the corner of my mouth, whisper *happy birthday!*

I have, again, been asked to shoot a wedding. Now this wedding isn't for well over a year yet, so I have time to brush up and learn techniques (I hope). I know I need to upgrade from my bitty SB400 flash unit.

What should I kind of focus on ?

I have been communicating with the bride (a friend) - she knows that I am NOT a pro, that I have no experience shooting weddings, that I have no 2nd shooter / assistant, and I have suggested she look at having someone else (either exclusively someone else, or as well as me). She is well aware of abilities/lack of abilities.

Oh, I am so much more comfortable with portraits !

HELPS ME PLEASE.

And no, I don't want to go post this in the "business of photography" section - they'll tear me apart over there, I've read some of the wedding shoot threads and it gets ugly.

A good bit of weddings IS portraits, Lea, so you should do just fine! You'll want to discuss a lot with the couple prior to the wedding. When do they want to do the "formal" portraits? The family portraits? Is it OK to shoot during the ceremony? (That part often has to do more with the person officiating than the bridal party.) If so, where do they want you to stand/sit? If you can, go visit the locations for both the wedding and the reception with the couple to find good locations for shots. Generally, you'll find you can shoot group portraits between the wedding and the reception. Another somewhat common practice is to shoot all the formal and fun portraits of the couple a week before the wedding - but this requires the bride to do the whole makeup and dress thing twice, which she may not want to do.

Do you have another mutual friend who has a camera? Even if that person isn't a pro either, it is nice to have another person shooting. You'll each catch different candids and can help each other out if need be.

I shot two weddings this year - one for a friend of mine and I had a friend come along as a "2nd shooter", and one for a friend of his, where I went along as the second shooter. Neither of us do weddings for a living. Neither of us get paid at all for photography! In both instances, we had the couple for about half an hour to an hour BEFORE the ceremony to do pictures. We had them plus families between the ceremony and the reception for group portraits. Then both of us shot candids at the reception, trying to cover everyone who attended.

We didn't use flash for the before portraits or group portraits - shot all of that outside for the most part, or using existing light inside. Used some flash at the receptions because no matter where these people have receptions, it always seems to be dark! I didn't have anything fancy - just a Canon 430EX on the camera with a diffuser.

Check out other wedding pictures to get ideas for poses. Ask the couple if they have anything in particular they're looking for. (The second couple I shot brought a sheet of pictures from the web of some poses they wanted to try.) If you're not comfortable shooting candids, find another even to practice at - a birthday party, a play day - anything! Get out there with the camera and flash and practice. Try available light, try flash. Just get comfortable with taking candids.

And you've plenty of time!

He's not a mutual friend, but I know of at least one other 'sucker' who is almost local-ish to the couple. Hmmmm . . .

I know most of my wedding's formal/family shots were done before the ceremony - but that was by MY choice, due to location and time of day. I wanted at least some taken at my grandparents farm - and those are still my favorite shots of the wedding.

Yep, there ya go! Ask the couple if there is a special place they want some photos done. It does require they be ready in advance of the ceremony, but it also is a chance to let them relax a bit prior to the ceremony, too.

And definitely get a second shooter - helps you relax! :-)

Thank you everyone! I've gotten so old that I can't remember my age, but I do know my oldest son's age, and how much older I am compared to him. A little dementia/forgetfulness makes the day more interesting, I say!
