Hi there

I am testing a Canon Speedlight 550ex and
will maybe buy it. Could anyone please tell
me how I use fill flash with this setup.

All the best

I have the 430ex, which is a similar design. For fill flash I lower the flash power, otherwise the full strength flash can blow out the image. To adjust the flash power, press the sel/set button, then use the +/- buttons to adjust the power. Press sel/set again to lock it in. I also like to angle the flash upwards slightly, so it is not so direct. I'm not an expert at using fill flash, however. Someone else may have a better suggestion on how to do it.

Thank you very much for your quick answear.
What program do you use on your camera combined
with your flash? I normaly use the Av for most
pictures with no flash attached....

I tend to usually shoot in AV as well. I use manual only for tricky stuff and then I usually need to experiment to get the right settings.

"Fill Flash" is truly a rather generic term. What it means is that you are using a flash in a daylight environment to 'fill' in places that might be obscured by shadows that are created by harsh sunlight or some other direct light source. In most cases, I don't believe that you really need to tweak any settings to get a good 'fill flash' in your photo. If you dial down the flash output power, you may or may not fill the shadow areas that you set out to fill in the first place. Your camera and flash metering is going to take care of that for you if you let it. It won't blow anything out unless you are trying to take too much control on your own :)

The only problem you need to watch out for when using 'fill flash' is that you aren't exceeding the maximum available sync speed for your flash. That will definitely blow things out. You should put your flash in the high speed sync mode to handle situations like that...

To start, I would suggest using the ETTL function on your flash and let it do the work. It will flash the amount you need according to your camera settings. After a while you can then experiment with different power settings to suit your creativity.
