Have taken this oft used phrase from a recent thread as it was likely to hijack the thread.
Those who can, do and those who can't, teach
discuss.... |

Check my profile talj - The Teacher
Check Andi's profile Ecce Signum - The Student
I am happy to take full credit for his ribbons :-)
Some happily admit they owe everything to their teachers whilst others claim all the glory without giving credit where credit's due ;-) *turns thread on ignore before Andi throws something at her* |

Whoever says a phrase like this has obviously never stepped in a classroom.

I know a man that was an incredible musician. Probably could've toured had he pursued it. But, dang o'mighty, he was a bad teacher. /shudders
Not just anyone can be a teacher.
Having said that, there could be some truth in it for some. I can't always get the shot, but I can teach others to. :) |

Sorry... I came back to add:
I dont know a single person who has developed all the skills that they have, and attained all the knowledge they have without the aid of a teacher.
Nobody learns to read on their own.
Nobody learns mathematics on their own.
Nobody has become a doctor on their own.
Everyone is essentially living their lives with the skills and knowledge attained because of their teachers (both formal and informal).

For my day job and my part time job, I'm pretty good at both. Or at least I've been told so. However I can assure you teaching either to someone else is not something I can do. I have tried, it takes a certain type of person to teach, for a person who is not a teacher it takes a certain type of student for it to work.

Found this here:
WHAT TEACHERS MAKE
A poem by: Taylor Mali
The dinner guests were sitting around the table
discussing life. One man, a CEO, decided to explain
the problem with education. He argued:
"What's a kid going to learn from someone who decided
his best option in life was to become a teacher?"
He reminded the other dinner guests that it's true
what they say about teachers: "Those who can...do.
Those who can't ... teach."
To corroborate, he said to another guest: "You're a
teacher, Susan," he said. "Be honest. What do you
make?"
Susan, who had a reputation of honesty and frankness,
replied, "You want to know what I make?"
I make kids work harder than they ever thought they
could. I can make a C+ feel like a Congressional Medal
of Honor and an A- feel like a slap in the face if the
student did not do his or her very best."
"I can make kids sit through 40 minutes of study hall
in absolute silence."
"I can make parents tremble in fear when I call home"
"You want to know what I make?"
"I make kids wonder."
"I make them question."
"I make them criticize."
"I make them apologize and mean it."
"I make them write."
"I make them read, read, read."
"I make them spell definitely beautiful, definitely
beautiful, and definitely beautiful over and over and
over again, until they will never misspell either one
of those words again."
"I make them show all their work in math and hide it
all on their final drafts in English."
"I make them understand that if you have the brains,
then follow your heart...and if someone ever tries to
judge you by what you make, you pay them no
attention!"
"You want to know what I make?"
"I make a difference."
"And you? What do you make?" |

The parts "learned by oneself" are built then on the foundation of innumerable other parts...taught by teachers. Nobody has learned it all on their own.

Those who can't do...teach poorly.
Those who do well and have the ability to teach others are the elite teachers. These teachers are rare but a gem when found. |

I find those that can explain the theory well tend to be able to teach well to those who need the theory to understand. They can't necessarily do well.
Those who understand and explain the theory well and do well can teach to anyone as they can explain and demonstrate as necessary. |

Nowadays, people learn lessons from mistakes only, teachers are obsolete. |

And all teachers have to do is teach kids the sum of all knowledge that our culture has figured out in the last few million years so that they are capable enough to do or think of a something that the next generation of teacher might think was worth passing on. |

It seems like every person has one teacher who touched their lives. Many people who have been successful in their lives have someone to thank; that someone is always a teacher whether they work for the department of education or not. Teachers change lives and society would be nowhere without them. |
