DeviantArt has set up a new site called DAPrints that looks like a good place to sell prints. They have a one time sign up fee of $24.95 to start selling prints. The profits on the prints seem to be a little thin, but for $25, it looks like recovering that costs may not be so difficult.
I signed up for it and hope to start setting up some images for that effort this evening... I just thought I would pass this along to anyone else who may be interested in selling prints.
This site may also be a good model for Drew and Langdon if they want to pursue this type of thing here :)

This looks interesing. Can one get the info (file specs, commissons, etc.) without actually signing up? I couldn't find that info there...
I might want to sign up just so I can get matte prints of my own work, as their print prices are comparable to other online services which (so far) only offer glossy prints. |

I''m not sure... the format is such that a print is sold for a base price plus whatever markup that you want to put on it. *YOUR* part of the money is 50% of the markup above the base price. If the base price is $10, and u sell the print for $20, you get $5.
Here is a FAQ and here is another FAQ

Thanks! -- the two FAQ pages answer almost all my questions. The pricing model the are using is the same as is used by MP3.COM for musicians to sell their CDs.
Since the retail prices I saw were already pretty good, since artists can buy prints at the base price, it might be worth the $25 even if I never sold a print...that's a pretty cheap "color ad"... |

Well, at least, you wouldnt have to sell much to recover your $25 and if you don't sell anything, you haven't lost but $25 :)
I will know more tomorrow... I'm gonna setup one or two of my images for that tonight... I don't know what the 'base' prices are yet... I haven't been that far into the site...

I''m looking at the $25 like a Costco membership -- I should make it back in reduced print prices. Plus, I MIGHT sell something. Plus, they''ll take the images in TIFF and not just JPEG (preserves quality, wastes bandwidth).
I''m thinking of submitting these two. This one got Hon. Mention at Jones. This Mt. Ranier image I want on matte paper anyway; I''m thinking of also trying it after running a watercolor filter.
Hmm...since they take scans...I have some excellent collages which were made on commission for me (I own them) which I''m almost sure would sell...some of the artist''s similar images have been previously sold to card companies...Hmmmmm...

Maybe this weekend I'll play with it. Maybe I'll try an oval vignette, since there's nothing too important in any of the corners. Thanks for the suggestion. I hope these people turn out to be successful and up-front business-folk, as manufacture/distribution has always been the bugaboo of the artist/author/craftsperson, and they seem to have a possible solution for this niche of the art market. |

Setting up prints to sell on that site doesn't seem to be too complicated. I have submitted two which are both waiting for approval. I don't know how long that process takes thought.
To get started, you need to set up a free account on www.deviantart.com. You have to submit the image there first (can be a smaller low res version) because you have to select an image from your 'deviation' list to submit it to the daprint site...

What is the quality of prints like from this site? I think I may give it a shot once I think I have a few more prints I think people might actually spend money on ;)

I, too have set up an account at DA Prints. John, aren't you sixstring? I ordered a copy of Queen's Gambit v2 today, plus several of my own nature shots. I should see the prints in a week or so. When they come in, I will let you know how they turned out. Swash
