I wanted to see how some portraits I just did look on paper, so I brought my CF Card down to the CVS for some 4X6 prints on Kodak paper. They look horrible! I chose CVS over the local camera shop to save about $.20 a print. Is this a you-get-what-you-pay-for lesson, or would I have had better results if I resized the images to 4X6 in Photoshop before printing? I'm not sure I you loose anything in having the images downsized for printing at a digital photolab or not.

I let Ekard Drug print my 4x6 prints, but i post process them as I would any other photo before they get them. They look great and cost me about $0.29 each.

I'm pretty happy with the 0.29 prints using the Kodak machine at Walgreens, but like jmsetzler I post process my pictures before taking them in for printing. As for more expensive being better, I was fairly disappointed by the results from the 0.35 Sony machine that's installed at the local Kinkos. Shop around to find the one you like - prints are cheap.

I know with Fuji machines we use here in Australia (DPC with Printpix NC100 printer) vary greatly in results. We have one in our store and I am most disappointed with the results we get. I know it's how they are set up because we had the machine replaced and the first machine was fairly well spot on for colouring. The new one is very dark and too much saturation on the red. I've been waiting 3 months so far for someone from Fuji to come out and adjust it correctly. So it's definately worth shopping around and trying a few machines.

I process all of my photos first, then take them to Costco, where I only pay 19 cents a print. They look great, and finished in one hour!

Is it really worth taking prints out for printing at one of those machines?

Maybe it's just my 'not wanting to wait for anything' personality, but I have been quite pleased with the images I print at home on 4x6 "Super High Glossy Paper" through my Canon i550 printer.

I can see having 8x10 or greater sized images printed out on the more 'Professional' printers in those machines, but for everyday images, I have been pleased with the timing and pricing of doing it myself. (Saves gas and time.)

Nelzie! I agree! I have an Epson Photo Stylus 2100 (I believe it's called the 2200 overseas) and wouldn't trade it for anything. I have compared prints from this to the Fuji DPC and the quality of the Epson leaves it for dead. Plus, now that I know my printer I know what is going to print well and also what adjustments need to be made to get the best results.

Ditto here Steve - I am similarly impressed with the quality of Costco's larger prints - pretty great quality 12x18 prints for only $2.99 apiece.
