I'm still fairly new to this site, but I've noticed that my traditional/mainstream kinds of pictures have done much better than anything sort of out there/overtly-modern/heavily reliant on photoshop. Is this typical?

I see, though, that your highest rated was quite abstract; BTW I really liked that shot, and the title.
Abstracts, well done, tend to do quite well, I think because so few are really done very well. Other unusual techiques or, as you say., "out there" stuff tends not to do so well, especially if the overall tone is not upbeat.
In particular, many pics that (intentionally) induce negative emotions tend no to do as well as you'd expect. Appears the voters like "hollywood endings", LOL.

first, welcome to DPC! It's good to see new blood around here!
What I have been advised on is that in order to wim ribbons you have to cater to the mass populace. This means, for the most part, keeping away from too much far reaching stuff. Nothing that requires folks to look at your shot for more than a nano-second to appreciate. Most folks & sometimes including myself, will zip through entries, especially when there are a lot fo 'em. Basically if your shot grabs teh viewer, is not like most of the shots out there, fits the challenge obviously & clearly AND is technically good, you have a great chance of scoring well.
One thing more... I would check out ribbon winners to get a feel of what it takes to win around here. THe standards are pretty high since we have too many extroadinary fotogs amongst us.
Goos luck!

And don't forget Murphy's Law, the photo you don't submit, is the photo that everyone will like :P
