Hi! Im wondering if any of you photo wizz's can give me a hand. I have a set of the PW Flex/Mini triggers for Canon, and Im under the impression that as well as ETTL, they can also fire manual flashes (ie: monolights) and work with the PW Plus II triggers. Basically what I need to happen, is for my Flex to fire my Calumet Genesis strobes - which has a standard 1/8 sync input (I think, or 2.5mm whatever, I'm not sure, same size as headphones, you get the point.). I know that my Flex has a sync out that can connect to a flash, but so far I havn't been able to get the stobe to fire. I'm not sure if I need a special cable for syncing, but from what I can tell, a 1/8 stereo headphone cable should be working adequately... but I'm apparently doing something (most likely multiple) things wrong. If I can get a Plus II to work with this system, that would be cool too. HELP! I'm not new to wireless flashes, I'm just used to optical slaves. Help! Thanks!

Hey Rich... it will definitely work the way you want it to.
A couple of things:
1. If your PW+II's didn't come with cables, you'll need these. They are DIFFERENT than a standard audio plug.
2. Make sure to set the profile on your Mini or Flex to your camera type (5D mk II) in the utility dropdown menu (you'll probably want to set it for BOTH channels). - Note: I only set mine for Channel 1, and left Channel 2 set to Auto... because I find that my friends with 1D mk III's like to borrow my MiniTT1, and it won't recognize the trigger if it's set to my 5D.
PM me if you need help.

Important to note:
I fire my PW+II's every day with my MiniTT1. The FlexTT5 may signal differently though - looking at the PW website, it says the MiniTT1 does "standard triggering with any PocketWizard Receiver including the FlexTT5, PlusII or MultiMAX", while it just says MultiMAX for the FlexTT5.
I'll ping one of my buddies to check on that (I don't own a Flex). |

Confirmed. The Flex does indeed trigger any PW - including the Plus II's.
As for OP's original question - turns out Rich is really trying to fire his strobes using a MiniTT1 on camera and the FlexTT5 at the strobe. This is exactly what the combination was designed to do (along with the ControlTTL on SpeedLights). The trick... is to find the right synch cable for your strobe manufacturer/model. This link will help to find the right cable. I used the earlier eBay link for my AB's, and they work great. |

Thanks Rob, I think that's the info I'm looking for.. My Calumet strobes have the same diameter sync input as the Flex, which indicates to me that the first eBay link you sent my way is probably the right cable, assuming the Flex and Plus II use the same two-conductor "tip sleeve" mono etc style sync cord. Hopefully I should be able to use the additional cables when I purchase a few Plus II units... Anyway, you've been a big help! Thanks again, and great images btw! I remember seeing your ribbons go up when I joined DPC, nice work. Take Care. |

On a sidenote... for any cables you need, I've found flashzebra to be great. Fast and cheap, and has everything you need in one place. |
