Moving on from a thread I have been following I thought I'd show you my cheap as chips snoot. This is my MKII version for a larger lamp.

The MKI version was used for this shot with a table lamp.

Any more cheap as chips lighting ideas folks?

Car sunshades make great and cheap reflectors and they fold up nice and portable.

I used them on this shot, as well as a small flashlight to highlight the main subjects:

I used a mylar emergency blanket from the camping department for this one, hung from the right side:

Cool. I set this thread to watch in the hopes that others will post cool low cost options like these. Thanks for this thread.

If you've never smoked a cigarette in your life, you owe it to yourself to try it.

Also, you can make a handy flash diffuser out of the pack. Tried this myself for a bit until my lights came, and I must say, it works very nicely for diffusing the popup flash.

Cigarette Pack Flash Diffuser

Also, a Fuji 35mm film canister (the translucent grey kind) works well too, and you get a free roll of film with it.

If you autograph them as "The Original Snooty Photographer" maybe you could sell some at that. You'll probably get a better price if you can use some exotic foreign brands rather than the commonplace Marlboro box ... :-)

when my last ebay auction came up i built myself one of these, great for product shots.

i don't have a photo of it (it does look kinda funny), but i built my very first lighting kit myself, an umbrella made out of a standard...umbrella. ;)
i bought rescue foil (the one with a silver and a gold side) for like a buck at a pharmacy and stuck it on the inside of the umbrella, then cut off the handle, built a holder to slide the rear end of umbrella onto the custom made (wooden) tripod plate and another plug to put on the external flash with the cheapo cactus receiver attached to and voila, an almost professional studio strobe for less than 30 bucks (even including the flash and tripod).

I use car sunshades too :-) Also have made smaller portable reflectors of cardboard with that super-heavy duty reflective tape from hardware stores designed to be wrapped around stovepipes. Very strong, very stick, very reflective, and doesn't wrinkle up as easily as plain ol aluminum foil.

talking about reflectors, i have a bunch of 60x150cm sized polystyrene sheets in my studio at home. not quite portable, but found them for free in a home store. they work great for studio stuff because they're light, very reflective and soft and get easily mounted on a stand/tripod (much easier than foldable reflectors).
i took this one on location using one of those for reflecting direct sunlight onto my model:
