I will be leaving on Wednesday morning to come up to the DC area. Hopefully, I will be there at or before Noon. I haven't created an 'agenda' for myself yet so I'm fairly open if anyone wants to go shooting other than this night shoot.

My cell phone number is:

John, thanks for the link over... I've locked the other thread.

Is there anyone else coming who hasn't spoken up?

I look forward to your results. When I was in DC a couple of years ago we did a guided nighttour and it was just great. The monuments seemed to get so much extra, what shall I call it..... power/emotion.
The highlight for me was the FDR memorial. I can still feel and smell sitting at the Japanese Cherry Trees looking across the Tidal Basin at the Jefferson Memorial.

People told me Washington would be boring, but I totally disagree. It is one of my favourite American cities, even prefer it above (?) NYC.
Another very impressive site was Arlington National Cemetery, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the Korean Veterans War memorial. Also liked the National Gallery of Art & the National Air and Space museum.

Wish I could be there. :) Have fun!

Of course it is! The more the merrier. :)

Now the next question is start time. I'd originally envisioned a pretty late start, like 1amish. But I want to make sure that people all have a chance to let me know if they want an earlier start. So- I'm looking at a midnight-1am start walking down from Smithsonian. The major target areas are Monument Triangle, including the WW2 Memorial. FDR and Jefferson are slightly out of the walk path- potentially doable, but people need to keep in mind the time to walk between monuments.

Memorial Triangle includes Lincoln, Vietnam, and Korea.

I was in DC back in December, and did my own self-guided night photo tour. I didn't hit everywhere I would have liked - mostly the areas between the capitol and the White House. Here are a couple of thoughts, suggestions, comments, etc.

- I was pretty worried about going out at night, alone, with all my camera gear (which was a pittance compared to what some of you will be carrying around). But (a nice side effect of the increased security) there were police and/or security guards on, almost literally, every corner. Then once I got going, I started to worry about getting stopped by the police for taking pictures! But I had no problems. Of course, you guys will have some added security of numbers. The point being, be careful, but don't be too worried about safety.

- The White House and the Old Executive Office Building are nice subjects. But be aware: the night I was out, they turned all the outside lights on both buildings off at 10pm. (I missed getting a shot of the OEOB because as I was setting up my tripod, the lights shut off.) :( I have no idea if that's normal, but if you plan on seeing either of these, you might want to check on if/when they shut the lights off and plan accordingly.

- I found some of the government office buildings around the capitol building were interesting.

That's all I can think of at the moment. If I think of anything else I'll post. Good luck and happy shooting. :)

Some of you may have seen my post on playing tourist in DC this week. We should be okay since President Reagan's body is heading back to CA on Friday.

In the interests of making sure we are okay though, I'm calling the Park Service Tuesday to verify we won't have any problems. I need a fairly firm headcount by then. As of now I have:

Me
Terry (ClubJuggle)
Setzler
Rich Terrell
Drake (fstopopen)

If those of you who plan on coming can pipe up before noon Tuesday- I'd appreciate it. :)

Clara- I hate National Security Special Event weeks...:P

I'm still a big maybe Clara, because I'm currently out of town and don't know exactly when I'll get home. I hope to show up but can't promise. BTW, thanks for organizing this GTG.

I'm leaving at about 3am or maybe a little sooner and I look forward to meeting everyone who is coming. I will be wandering around the DC area so if anyone is interested in shooting other than the Saturday night event, call me on my cell phone at 828-234-3557. If I don't answer it, leave me a message and I'll call you back. I don't always hear it ring when it's buried in my camera bag :)

Clara,

Thanks for organizing this event. I look forward to shooting with you some extra as well :)

Well, we are down to the last 48 hours! Here's the plan:

On Saturday- those interested in dinner will meet up at Union Station at 9:30pm. Union Station is located on the Red Line. It's also a 20 minute walk from Smithsonian Station.

At 10:45pm those not doing dinner will meet up at Smithsonian Station. We will depart from Smithsonian Station at 11:15 (to allow for stragglers.) Depending on weather and mood we will head down from there.

My cell phone # is 240-401-5772. On Saturday if you have questions, or are running late please, please call me. I want to make sure that we don't lose anybody on the mall!

Those of you who are in hotels or who can provide bunk space in the event of a problem, drop me a PM. I want to make sure that nobody tries driving home at 3 in the morning. I also want to make sure that any metro people will not be stranded if they miss the last train out of Smithsonian. Remember that last train will be about 2:30am. Metro does not run all night!

This is gonna be great!

Clara

Hey gang- just a reminder that tomorrow I need a heads up from you beginning after 3pm if you are coming. Just drop a call on my phone. If I get no call, I assume you are not coming. If you get there late, and didn't call me, head for the Lincoln Memorial end of the mall.

Dinner at 9:30 Union Station. Meet by America (the name of the food place). I will have my phone with me, so feel free to call! :)

Okay- last call! If you are interested in joining us for part or all of the fun tonight, please feel welcome! This should be a great night!

Dinner- 9:30 Union Station. The resturant is America. Look for Setzler or ClubJuggle if I'm not there.

Shooting meetup- 11:15 at Smithsonian station. Please note there is construction going on at the extreme ends of the blue line in PG County. We will be leaving from the Smithsonian station area at 11:30. If you are going to be late you NEED TO CALL ME! :) Or ClubJuggle or Setz. We don't want to lose people.

240-401-5772. If you get my voicemail, leave me a message.

See y'all tonight!

Clara

Thanks again to Clara for organizing this event and for everyone else who was there - I had a fun and challenging learning experience. I'll try to post some of my pictures later, but in the mean time.....I'm getting some sleep! = )
