I gave you a higher score than I gave hotpasta, if it makes you feel any better. I gave you... let's see... a 5.

Given your voting record you obviously recognize "unappreciative" voters who lack understanding of what constitutes a good photograph.

It is unfortunate that DPC voters are propagandized into demeaning good photography with pathetically low scores. Some day, perhaps, that will change.

But if it does, what will Slippy have to complain about?

Oh, wait.... Slippy complains about everything. Carry on! :)

You have to look at this from the positive side. You did score above average - admittedly 0.09 above average BUT above average nonetheless.

Be strong - don't let it colour your life and move on :)

Sorry, but on a scale of 1 to 10, the average is actually 5.5 :-)

What I see is the sharp areas are the middle of the tongue, and the bridge of the nose. Everything else is soft. Teeth should be sharp. I would not have voted it 5, but probably not much more than 6.

The voters vote what the voters vote. Shoot to please you, and live with the results; or study up and shoot to please them and keep tweaking your style till you get what they want.

Either way works. But shooting to please you can make it harder to win ribbons. Shooting to please them, can make it harder to please you. If you are unhappy with your results, perhaps it is because you are unhappy about the choice that you made when you took the picture.

There are a lucky few, whose natural style seems to fit the mass appeal needed for high votes on a regular basis. Like lottery winners, I am not one of them.

Actually, no... On a scale of 1 to 10, 5.5 is the median point. Slippy's in-production jaguar scored early half a point below average on that scale. Against the average score and the median score for this challenge (5.6740, 5.7055 respectively) he did even worse.

Even more appallingly, he finished 329th out of 407 entries, placing him squarely in the bottom 25% of that particular challenge. Altogether a dismal performance for a snarling, in-production jaguar...

That may be the median, but since one cannot give a vote of 5.5, most of us tend to give a 5 instead. Making 5 an average shot.

IMO. Obviously others disagree. Keep in mind, that with all the talented photographers on this site, the bar is pretty high.

Very true. I have recently taken to aiming at appealing to certain segments of the voting population here. If you interpret the voting breakdown and comments you can see if you hit your intended audience. One thing this place proves is that everyone has an opinion, and they are all different. The winners are the ones where everyone most people at least agree it does not suck.

To paraphrase ...

And that's the news from Lake DPC-be-gone,
Where all the women are strong,
All the men are good looking,
And all the photographers are above average.

I'd have given it a 2 for being so damned cliche.

Really, it's 5.05 [(10+1)/2=5.05 or 11/2]

Hey Shannon, how do we find out the real average on DPC? We can see the average for each individual challenge, but since I can't download that and I don't want to go type it all in, is there a place where we can find the actual average over all challenges?
07/11/2009 02:30:33 PM · #47
Ok, the average over the last 40 challenges is 5.3986 -- so actually, it's not that bad of a score.
