I bought my first Nikon the D70 after using my newspapers nikon equipment and have had no regrets, still loving Nikon. |

I think I will buy a Nikon next, just because people hate them. : P
Also, I hear that Fuji is dropping their DSLR line, an unconfirmed rumor, and I have a closet full of old Nikon glass, so it just makes sense for me to go Nikon or find a good used S5 Fuji.

Well it worked for me Sander. When I had my D70 several beautiful 70 pound women rushed to my place to have their portraits. But they were just to skinny, twiggy like. So I got a D200 and several beautiful 200 pound women appeared for their portraits. Now, because of this experience I'm afraid to purchase the new D700....... |

WOW! I created this thread last night and look at the response! I was basically just having fun. Nikon rocks the casbah! I used to have a Rebel G when I was shooting film. It was a pretty good camera but that was back in my younger days when I thought a lens was universal.
I didnt like the comment about Monet's brush though. Of course his BRUSH made applied the paint but his mind applied the concept. Same goes for a photo. To me it doesnt matter which brand of machine you use, in the end it's how well you can wield it that counts.
This has been fun though!
As far as Pentax. Well. The K1000 was an amazing device (notice I said 'device' and not 'machine' as in reference to DSLR's) |

Pentax is for people that actually, you know, enjoy photography. |

I'm a Canon guy, but only because I liked the way they functioned (control layout & logic) better than I liked the Nikon back when I got my first DSLR. Actually, prior to my DSLR, my P&S camera was a Nikon.
As I see it, both systems have strengths and weaknesses. I wish Canon had the ultra-cool Nikon flash system, instead of a clunky flash system that hasn't been updated since 1980. On the other hand, it seems to me that there are more lens options for Canons.
But honestly, for anyone wanting to buy their first camera, I stick with the "go play with it and then decide" advice. I don't think you can go wrong with either brand, in terms of getting a good piece of equipment. It just comes down to which points you like better personally.

.... From some time in the seventies, say, Nikon SLRs established themselves as the ones that could go to work, go out on the piss afterwards, take a solid thrashing all the way and still get up and go to work again in the morning. Rough and tough, but with some serious optics and so on to make them an obvious pro choice.

Actually, that would be the mid-60's. Nikon OWNED the professional SLR field. Nothing else even came close. Nikon F1 is one of the great, legendary cameras. I used a whole series of Nikon-F cameras throughout my career as a professional, but always held onto my original F-1.
Canon was trying to get in on this train, and not having a lot of luck, until sometime in the early 80's, when suddenly Canon was showing up everywhere in professional camera bags. I'm not sure why, exactly, but in any case there came a stage where Canon and Nikon were pretty much equal in professional loyalty and in features, price points, build quality, glass quality, and so forth. This lasted for a while.
Digital really mixed it up. Canon was way ahead of Nikon in developing high-end digital systems, and Nikon was cast in the catchup role; which they seem to be doing, or to have done. These things go in cycles, I guess...

*shrugs* Seems like this thread is about a whole lot of nothing, to be perfectly blunt. I've never seen a post here on the site slamming Nikon so badly that it could be termed hating.
I have nothing against Canons. Or Olympus/Pentax/Sony/Sanyo/Mattel Barbie/etc cameras. It just so happened that a camera with a rep for being a great entry-level DSLR was being promoted at the time, I had the $$ and the level of interest, so I bought a D40 kit. The camera my D40 replaced was a Canon Powershot, with which I also took many decent pictures with. No conscious choice to NOT buy Canon (with the possible exception of them using Avril Lavigne to pimp the brand) but I had already bought the Nikon by then anyway.
If you have the eye and can see the shot, and can capture it, does it really matter what brand you used to capture it with? |

Why do you hate or like Nikon? |
Just curious, if its the artist that makes the difference then why was switching to Nikon "the sensible thing to do"? |

Is he? Missed that completely. But if it's going to come to a celeb smackdown, I'd much rather buy something pimped by Demi's boytoy than some forgettable pop star.
*ready to duck flames from Avril fans now* |

How can any hate an inanimate object. I started my career with Nikon. I changed to Canon when they introduced their auto focus stystem, that was far superior. In fact I have used pretty well all of the brands and formats out there from 35mm, MF, Large Formats of 4x5 and 8x10 and all digital formats from cropped sensors to 50 mega pixel backs.
Nikon make some of the finest glass out there, but so do Pentax, Canon and Leica.
