The point is that you only notice a "bad" border -- a good one just becomes a part of the overall picture-viewing experience. Rather like a well-done film score being one where you didn't notice the music ....

I agree with this, although, for some films, noticing the score can be good, although, you're usually right, it's better if you don't.

I tend to think that with borders, the more simple, the better though.

I think this is the heart of the matter, especially where DPC is concerned. There are all sorts of cool border effects you can use. In my opinion, when the border attracts any special attention, it is too much.

One of the biggest 'mistakes' I see on this site is the use of colors other than black or white (or thereabouts) for the border. I often see borders made of colors that don't exist in the photo or compete with colors in the photo for attention. A border is not going to win you any prizes.

IMO, the purpose of a border is to separate the image from its environment and to attract attention to the image itself. It allows a viewer to easily find and view the image. If you taped a photograph up on your wall at home, it would look odd and may not even be spotted by a casual eye. If you put it in a frame that contrasts a little with the environment and does not argue with the photo for attention, you usually have something nice.

I intended my comment a different way...

When I look at the Mona Lisa the frame is the last thing I would ever care about or notice. You could put it in a cheap Wal-Mart frame and it wouldn't bother me. The picture is the only thing that matters.

Put Mona in this frame and you will notice ...

If Mona were in this frame I might mention it in my comment but still would not score it lower than a 10.

In the opposite case where the frame was perfect for the image but the image itself sucked I'd probably give it a slightly higher score sorta like giving an "A" for effort.

MY bottom line is...

The picture is all that matters!

Edit: Edited for personal preference. :)
