I personally would probably vote "DQ" on this for violating the "depicting the use" clause of the TOU quoted above (the very first line of the challenge rules says "All challenge submissions must comply with the DPChallenge Terms of Use"). But the smoking thing has come up before in DQ requests, and usually more SC's vote "no DQ", putting those of us who voted DQ in the minority.
I'll also say that the word "encourages" is open to broad interpretation; there have been a lot of past challenge submissions of alcohol, cigarettes and drugs that have been deemed to not be "encouraging", and since there is no person or animal "using" those items, it isn't "depicting use". (The "depicting the use" clause is usually more clear-cut.)

You were the first to say it! I also thought of the "habit of photography" It's my biggest addiction. We have to remember all the great habbits too (eating well, exercise, getting to work on time, remembering to set the alarm clock... ) Heehee.. I have no idea what I want to photograph for this challenge! |

don't confuse habit with hobby. photography can be somewhat addictive, yet its still a favorite activity more than anything else. Placing that activity in either the habit or hobby category depends on the person (specially on a photography website like this one), so i dont want to start an argument about this. But when your taking your picture, be sure that you understand the difference between the two, or people may say your out of context.
There's an important difference between these two words: a habit is something that you do regularly without necessarily having control over it (it almost becomes a reflex, like smoking or biting nails), but a hobby is something that you do that you WANT to be doing (like most sports or arts). |

So, are there any good habits, using this definition? |

Brushing/flossing, eating healthily, some other hygienic practices unnecessary to describe in detail here ... |

According to the definition above (by Peete) a Habit is something that you do not have control over. I, gladly, have control over my eating, brushing, grooming and health. So, again I wonder, are they any good habits?
Of course, most DPCers won't read this post and there will be photos of 'hobbies' and exercise/eating-well, etc. But just out of curiousity and literal value... if this is the definition, then what are good habits? :) |

Customary manner or practice: a person of ascetic habits.
An addiction, especially to a narcotic drug.
Physical constitution.
Characteristic appearance, form, or manner of growth, especially of a plant or crystal.
A distinctive dress or costume, especially of a religious order.
A riding habit. |

Things which are habitual are still be subject to some degree of control, as any smoker or drug addict can tell you. The question is whether you "automatically" go brush your teeth as part of your "routine," not that you have a choice of brushing technologies and dentifrices.
I think you are maybe confusing "habitual" with "involuntary;" breathing is involuntary (although we still have some control over it), smoking is habitual. |

Sometimes when we do things out of habit, like getting off the freeway at a particular exit, the current conditions are in conflict with our habituated response. I would love to photograph such an error so as to pictorially represent both that it is habitual behavior that is usually okay, and this time it does not work at all. I haven't had any good ideas yet, but I have set my mind to find one. We'll see by next Tuesday whether I find one or not. |

I was going to say breathing would be habit, but I should've read Gereal's post before responding...sorry General.

<<< (Remember that encouraging or depicting the use of any illegal substance is a violation of DPC Terms Of Use.) >>>
Does that mean that somebody who submits a picture involving the consumption of an alcoholic beverage will need to prove the the person doing the consuming is of legal drinking age?
