Still Life

Not to be a jerk, but...

"This article relies largely or entirely upon a single source. Please help improve this article by introducing appropriate citations of additional sources."

The wiki entry is highly biased towards one aspect of still life as art. I would suspect that The Great Masters would take high offense at some of it's statements.

Later,

Tom

And your take on still life is what, personal opinion? To each their own.

No - my "take" is based on education and a life long interest in art and art history - in particular impressionism, abstract modernism and photography of The Great Masters.

Later,

Tom

Ah, yes of course. You're an expert. LOL!

Well, no - I'm not an expert - never said or implied that I was. I only noted my own curriculm vitae with respect to this challenge in response to your apparent distaste for my opinion.

I bow to your interpretation - you are clearly much more literate and informed that I could ever be with a wide range of experiences and depth of knowledge that a mere mortal like myself can never hope to achieve. That one can impart such wisdom with a mere LOL is - well astounding.

I will strive to achieve your lofty intellectual heights in the future. Thank you for setting me straight - it has been an highly enlightening experience for me.

Later,

Tom

What I'm seeing is a lot of repetitive images from previous challenges - same concepts, same execution, same technique - I bet I can even name the author that aren't even close to being a still life. It's kind of boring.

Also I'd like to chime in here on what is or isn't. Still life can be viewed as a inanimate or animate object in an arranged or natural setting. Still life as a genre is more asthetic than artistic - more impression than impact - a natural blend of shape, color and/or form. It's not a genre particularly suited to photography as it is for oil/water color. The forms and shapes should be gentle not angled or sharp and the colors should be soft and complimentary, not jarring or at odds.

Hope that helps.

Tom

Thanks Tom - I totally agree. The pictures that I am still questioning definitely don't fit the aesthtic that I know classic still life paintings are made of. When I decided to enter this challenge I went into it trying to fit the mood with color and form more than anything else.
and then.... well I won't tell you what I think might have gone wrong. But a good still life requires a lot of thinking.

Part of the problem is not so much how the subject is interpreted as how it is presented - the asthetic value as opposed to the artistic value. Not everything that is art has asthetic value and not all asthetic imagery has artistic value. The neat thing about still life imagery is that you can have one or the other be just as effective and be a "still life".

Monet is an acknowledged master of the genre, but according to contemporaries, his students actually did the setups or sketches of a particular still life scene and left it to Monet to interpret them. One of his paintings, done in his garden is considered one of his best "still life" images, [thumb]//www.maboysen.com/images/Monet%27s%20Garden/LilyPads-lg.jpg[/thumb] but, in theory, isn't really a "still life" if you use a strict interpretation of the term.

And I got carried away again.

Sorry. :>)

Tom

Monet still life
(Fixed link, Teafran

Interesting example. The one(s) I like to quote are those by Cezanne who did some masterly still life paintings (love the way they say it in French: "Nature Morte") where, they said he would keep the fruit around his studio in Aix-en-provence until it rotted, saying that all those colors are in the fruit and must be in the final painting.

You know, with a degree in mathematics, you would think I could figure out HTML wouldn't you? :>)

Cezanne had an interesting approach to almost everything he painted - part minimalist, part romantic, part impressionist - amazing art. I heard somebody refer to him at a MOMA lecture once as the Leonardo of the art world - don't know about that, but it does convey the idea of how a true Master thinks.

I've got a whole rant saved up about still life and photography - I might do a monograph sometime on the subject - when I'm about 80 and all grouchy and curmudgeonly and stuff. :>)

Later,

Tom

PS: Your collaborator at the AWE gallery, Chris Kibre, I think would understand the whole part this and part that thing - she has a real feel for the concept based on her art. There's some great work there by the way.

The curious thing is this:

No where do I find lilypads referenced as a still life.

However, I find many Monet's that are flowers or fruit on a table that are called "still life with pears" "still life with pheasant".

curious.

I'll find the reference for you.

Might take a few minutes as I'm out and about today, but I will find it for you.

Ha, what you need is a degree in modern-day iconography, teafran. Those cute little pictures up there can get confusing!

Speaking about confusing, some think the discussion on Still Life is confusing, wait until the next Challenge featuring Complimentary Colors comes up.
:-))

Thanks for the nice words about our gallery and my buddy, Chris Kibre.

I've stayed fairly steady, although I just got smashed with a 4...and I've been seeing some other lower votes...

Ho Hum!!! - Disappointing to see 154 views, 86 votes, yet only 3 comments - oh well.

I finally started voting (and commenting and looking at some of the pictures, and I thought I wade into this conversation a bit. I am, by no means, an artist, but I guess when I think of Still Life, I think of 3 things

1) shot indoors - not sure why
2) the whole frame is filled with the environment - not just a black or white background
3) not a closeup / macro shot (kind of ties in with #2)

I guess those are just my opinions, but I find that only a few of the submissions meet those criteria. Some of the others are very nice shots in their own right, but I find that I'm putting a lot of DNMC's as comments.

Anyone else??

Plain backgrounds work for me--I was looking at a lot of the dutch masters, and a lot had just mottled brown backgrounds.

I've never gotten a wish list before. With 2 favs and 1 wish list I would take a score of 0. I think that definitely makes up for it even though you know you won't come close to a ribbon.

BTW I am at a 4.9 and have no comments from you about DNMC so I guess you think I'm legit right?

Just over a 6

I think it is amazing I am anywhere near a 6 as it was 5.1 before, so I'm very happy
