Mine was at 6.7 for the first couple of days but took a beating just after the discussions started up in here ;) It's recovered slightly but not back to those dizzy heights - ahh well

Considering that my photo was hovering around 5.9/6.0 for the first few days, I am amazed by the current score.

There are some absolutely gorgeous images in this challenge. It is great fun to give out well-deserved high scores. It seemed to me that there were a lot more great shots in this challenge than usual. To quote Lawrence Welk - "wonderful, wonderful, wonderful!"

Glad to see yours is goin up...mines been in a downward spiral...was at 6.39 at one point...goes up and gets hammered with low votes and back down

I've never gotten a wish list before. With 2 favs and 1 wish list I would take a score of 0. I think that definitely makes up for it even though you know you won't come close to a ribbon.
BTW I am at a 4.9 and have no comments from you about DNMC so I guess you think I'm legit right? |

I finally started voting (and commenting and looking at some of the pictures, and I thought I wade into this conversation a bit. I am, by no means, an artist, but I guess when I think of Still Life, I think of 3 things
1) shot indoors - not sure why
2) the whole frame is filled with the environment - not just a black or white background
3) not a closeup / macro shot (kind of ties in with #2)
I guess those are just my opinions, but I find that only a few of the submissions meet those criteria. Some of the others are very nice shots in their own right, but I find that I'm putting a lot of DNMC's as comments.
Anyone else?? |
Plain backgrounds work for me--I was looking at a lot of the dutch masters, and a lot had just mottled brown backgrounds. |

Ha, what you need is a degree in modern-day iconography,  teafran. Those cute little pictures up there can get confusing!
Speaking about confusing, some think the discussion on Still Life is confusing, wait until the next Challenge featuring Complimentary Colors comes up.

The curious thing is this:
No where do I find lilypads referenced as a still life.
However, I find many Monet's that are flowers or fruit on a table that are called "still life with pears" "still life with pheasant".

Cezanne had an interesting approach to almost everything he painted - part minimalist, part romantic, part impressionist - amazing art. I heard somebody refer to him at a MOMA lecture once as the Leonardo of the art world - don't know about that, but it does convey the idea of how a true Master thinks.
I've got a whole rant saved up about still life and photography - I might do a monograph sometime on the subject - when I'm about 80 and all grouchy and curmudgeonly and stuff. :>)

PS: Your collaborator at the AWE gallery, Chris Kibre, I think would understand the whole part this and part that thing - she has a real feel for the concept based on her art. There's some great work there by the way.
