My Nikon D300. which worked fine until Sunday, suddenly seems to have lost the ability to autofocus. Pushing the shutter button does nothing at all in terms of focusing the lens --- and I have tried multiple lenses at this point. Same problem with all of them. Pushed the +/- and QUAL buttons simulaneously to RESET the camera's internal settings --- and confirmed the my C/S/M lever was not set to M (for manual focus). Lenses all seem to be set for A/M instead of M as well. Any other suggestions? Is this likely to be something that requires a (long) trip back to Nikon. Argh.
Thanks for any input.

| My commiserations, this doesn't sound good. Have you tried cleaning the contact points on lens and body? |

| I don't know Nikon, but does it have a custom function to set the autofocus to the button that normally used for AE lock? My camera does, in this mode the shutter button does not activate the autofocus. |

| Thank you both for your suggestions. I have now cleaned all contact points --- and have RESET all settings to their from-the-factory values, which should get rid of any "custom" settings I may have set intentionally or by accident. No luck. Yuck. |

| Not sure about the 300 but there is a small switch on the front of my D5o that is used to turn the auto focus off, if the 300 has one you might check it to make sure it is not set on manual. |

I'm so sorry to hear this. From what you've said, you've done everything you can do. It definitely sounds like its time for a trip to Nikospital. Good luck with it! |

There is a switch on the front that goes between c s m. M is for manual focus. Could it possibly be set to manual? |
