I think my first assessment was the correct one--time for a break.

Come on Wendy I just know you'll pull a blue bird out of the hat any time now

I'm not pouting (ok... yes I am) I think I'm just over-thinking and over stressing. I think I've just been pushing too hard. I've entered every challenge since I've started, and I think it's just burn-out. I figure if I just step back a little and wait for the challenge that says "shoot me, shoot me!!" I'll be much happier than forcing the point. (I'm getting that opinion because of the fact that I'm dreading the challenges out now instead of being excited over them.)

Don't worry, this isn't a "goodbye forever you lousy people" email!

Certainly not something you should do in a Tacks challenge, especially ;-)

On topic: I'm at a nice, average 5.5.

I'm up to a 4.7. I know mine sucks though. I tried something new. I am having a hard time with getting lighting right for indoor close-ups though. Probably doesn't help that I currently own only 1 lens though. I have no options and that is not a good thing. It is forcing me to learn new things though.

if you'd like to take some indoor close ups, you could make a light box for cheap. there are a lot of examples you can find online, such as this one

now, as far as my score goes, i'm pretty happy with it

Have a look on ebay, you can buy a light tent really cheap.
I just ordered 48' cube one today for approx $75 but the smaller ones are much cheaper.

The 18-70 Lens you have is fine but for really close up stuff a macro lens really helps

I guess I can't complain about this, considering mine really had little effort behind it.

I woke up this morning hoping that perhaps my score would have risen to a decent, acceptable number overnight....

Slightly above my average, which is better than I hoped for with this shot. Would love to break into the 6's though.

An economical alternative to a true macro lens is a close-up filter that you screw onto the front of your 18-70 lens. I took the photo that I entered in the 1000th Challenge ("Fleeting Passion") using a +4 close-up filter. I got a set of three filters a my local Wolf Camera for about $25.

To get diffused lighting for close-ups, I went the cheap route here also by taking an old boot box, cutting out the front, and taping a piece of gift wrap tissue paper across it. I use a cheap clamp on light with a daylight bulb behind it for most of my indoor "studio" type shots. It also helps to get a piece of white foamboard to use as a reflector to bounce some light back onto the subject on the opposite side from the light source.

Just a few ideas on what I try to use to get decent lighting on the cheap.
