that I'm sure I know the answer to--but have to ask anyway. I assume that topaz is illegal in basic editing? (just found it, and it's so cool!)

If so, in topaz, it shows all the settings that it's working with, but things like adapative exposure I don't see in elements. Is there a way to figure out what topaz is doing? I'd really like to understand its process and be able to do some of the options on my own.

As long as you are applying Topaz to the entire image, it is legal.

just noticed this thread ..
i think topaz adjust is very similar to lucisart and lucisart is illegal in a basic edit challenge ..
then there's topaz vivacity ..
i think you'd be wise to check with the sc to be absolutely certain .. :)

AFAIK, the SC has not discussed this particular adjustment, but many of these plugins perform actions illegal in DPC Basic editing.

Personally, I would assume it to be illegal until specifically deemed otherwise.

You might want to get the ball rolling by submitting a ticket with this question, along with your best description of what effects it's intended to produce and how it does it*, and a before/after example of the processing.

*A description from the source's website might save time here ...

Ok, in looking at topaz adjust--I'm not even going to submit to the SC because it should be illegal. It takes care of things by breaking them up into a certain number of zones and dealing with them individually. I can't do that in basic, so no wonder it's able to get the effect I was looking for but unable to do!

drat.

As long as we are at it, what about the clarify/clarity adjustment? It gives a similar adjustment, but is simpler and seems to apply globally across the entire image, so I think it should be ok under basic.

In PaintShopPro or in Photoshop. The two things have the same name, but apparently act differently.

I would think Clarify is okay but I can't imagine that Topaz Simplify would be legal even in Advanced due to the rule that
You May Not
"use ANY editing technique to create new image area, objects or features (such as lens flare or motion) that didn’t already exist in your original capture(s)."
or
"use distortions to create new effects or radically alter objects"

I just had to undo a pretty cool thing I had for the zoo challenge.

Hopefully, SC will soon provide some guidance about Topaz in both rule sets.

My own opinion is that while it's a great tool, it might be a bit too powerful and places too much emphasis on the processing rather than the photography.

I'm confused about that, because simplify just seems to blur things. I just tried it on a photo of mine, and the details were still there, just blurred quite a bit. I didn't think it was radical...

Also, I don't think any topaz would be legal in basic unless the regions are set to 1--otherwise it applying it differently to different areas (that's my understanding of regions)
