Hi - does anyone know how large a print I can make from a D300 image, at the maximum? I'm completely freaking out, have just been asked to put on a 2 month exhibition in 5 weeks time at an arts centre here and not entirely sure how large my prints will go - I've never had to go beyond an A2 up until now.....I'll be needing at least large poster size. I'm sure someone out there has all the facts and figures on 12MP cameras.......please help!

I'm not sure on the native maximum, but you should consider methods of enlargement such as Genuine Fractals or Enlarge Pro if you have concerns. I'm sure there are other varieties too, but I have no personal experience in this and would recommend some investigating.

Ohh, not sure. I was thinking around 200 pixels per inch, which comes to about 14" by 21", which is much less than A2. Mind you 200pixels/inch is a pretty conservative figure. Others might have different opinions.

Have you tried resizing upwards in CS3 or other specialist software? (none comes to mind, sorry!) (ETA, like what spiritalspatula said ;-))

Terrible isn't it, we all spend way too much time taking shots for web/internet usage and smaller prints!
If anyone else knows, please let me know.
In the meantime I'll have a go at resizing on PS3, but not crazy about doing that in case I lose quality......or won't I?

You'll lose some quality. It depends how gigantic you are aiming to do it... the more you enlarge the more quality will suffer. Those programs supposedly do a better job than PS's interpolation method by using a fractal based formula. As I understood it, it makes a file that represents that image independent of pixels based on some mysterious algorithm. Then, when you upscale, the pixels are reapplied or whatever you want to call it.

remember, it's not just the size of the print, it's how far your audience is going to see them.
The D300 can do billboard sizes, just your audience is 50' feet or more away. Nobody takes a 20' x 30' and sits 5" away :)

I printed this shot (40" x 96" prox) in b&w at Kinkos for about $20.
Came out great.

I have made 24 x 36 prints from 5-6MB JPEGS from 7-8MB RAW files from my 8.2MP 20D. Up close they weren't perfect, but they looked fantastic from more then a few feet away. You should be able to go pretty damn big if you use all you pixels and don't compress the image...
