Man, I'm confused! I wanted a quick studio set-up, never done it.

So here I am assuming two bigger flashes one on the right, then left, and one smaller one with gels for the backdrop. I figured on purchasing some infared triggers because of the less interference. An infared trigger on the hotshoe w/some recievers connecting all other three flashes. Right?

Nope...I'm thinking now I have to purchase the canon 480ex or 580ex to get any of this to work. Is this true?

I'm confused too...what is it you're trying to do?

"Studio flashes" generally means big units, like AlienBees. Canon only makes the smaller hotshoe (Speedlite) flashes, which are more than capable of being used in a studio - I'm just trying to figure out which ones you mean.

If you go with the Canon Speedlites, you can buy the Canon IR Transmitter, which mounts to the camera hotshoe and remotely controls a number of Speedlight EX580s and/or EX430s. Alternately, I believe that the EX580 has the ability to "command" other 580s and 430s, so you could use one mounted on your camera instead of the special transmitter unit.

If you're looking for true, big studio strobes, you will need some sort of wireless triggers (IR, visual, radio, etc.) That's a whole other story.

Actually, if you're talking about strobes for the studio (not Speedlites)... you won't really need much (if anything). Not sure if your Rebel has an external synch port (if not, just go grab a cheap hotshoe adapter). You can shoot wired to your main light - the others will fire via slave.

If you're talking about Speedlites (580/420) you can use the 580 to trigger the slaves, or get the ST220 (it's almost as much as another flash though) or some cheap IR triggers. I'd suggest using a flash - that way you can take advantage of the E-TTL capabilities.

Either one will likely get the results you're looking for. Both will be fun to play with :O)
