I just got asked for proof of validity for my Rusted entry. Why would someone bother disqualifying an image that is doing so poorly (averaging 3.7)? JEESH! The thing is, there isn't anything about my image that would lead someone to believe it should be disqualified. Weird. I don't know if we're allowed to post thumbnails to ongoing challenge entries so I wont. I'm new so I don't know how often people get asked to submit proof early on. If I get disqualified, at least the humiliation will end. :D I did have proof though. The only thing I worry about is that the picture was shot before I read the reminder about setting the date on your camera. Not being a particularly anal type, it has never occurred to me to check the date before now. I entered it anyway, figuring I wouldn't come close enough to a ribbon for anyone to bother checking the date. The idea that someone would question the processing never entered my mind.

Oh well, live and learn.

I just sent in proof myself, and the only reason I could think of for being asked is that I changed the tone of the image a bit. Either that or that my object is really out of place and might look merged (but I doubt that).

I get it we are allowed to do tone/color editing as long as we don't use masking tools and do it to the entire image, so no problem. My biggest concern was to find the source picture in a 4-5 image burst shot. Sometimes I get lazy and burst away to find the sharpest one in a bunch, but in this case they're so similar I can't make out for sure which one I used.

Guess if I can't, the SC can't either so I just picked the likely one :-)

My first challenge in over a month, it appears I'm more rusty than my entry!

LOL :0)

I've been sitting at 5.79 for several hours now...hopefully we both might be able to eek out a 6 in the end!

I've gone down considerably but still above average for me, so not so bad.

Wow, 6.25. That's great! I hope it keeps up for you. I am around a 4.7. I think that is my universal average in these challenges. I would love to hit a 6 one day. My goal is to get a ribbon by the end of the year. :) I hope that's not too proud :)

I really thought I'd do well in this challenge since i worked hard to get the shot I submitted and paid very close attention to composition, lighting, contrast and color. Hmm, just goes to show... two people rarely ever think of art the same way!

Good luck everyone!

That's impressive for you to critique all the photos! Or comment at least. I usually only comment when I have some constructive criticism or want to offer massive amounts of praise. I keep this site open for the forums, but it's hard to go through the photos while at work. Even at home for that matter. When did people's lives get so busy?! I can't even eat dinner at a table anymore...

More than 10% comments is always fun.

Where do you find out about the votes, average vote on your entry, and the comments? This is my first entry and it is displayed so that I cannot vote on it, but there is no other info with it. Is that because no one has yet voted on it???

My Home > My preferences under Site preferences click on the My Scores and Save.

It can be viewed on the title page. Left column. Every hour for user and there's a button for members.

There is no humilation with being asked to submit your original file, only with having your entry found illegal. Many take it as sort of an underhanded compliment to be asked.

You should wear a DQ request on one of your images as a badge of honor. Generally only the good ones get those requests.

Thanks Mr. Welland. I am enjoying getting the feedback. 100 votes and 7 comments, and my picture is on page 4. I started rating from the back and have only got a page and a half done. I think a lot of people are working very hard rating and commenting on the pictures. I am learning a lot by participating here. Now, I need to start thinking about opposites and see if I can put what I have learned into practice.

You can go into My Preferences > My Home and adjust it so that all pictures are on 1 page.

Note: If you have a fast connection this is a great way to see all of the thumbnails at once.

Note 2: Everybody's thumbnails are in a different order.

This is my first entry to score over 6 for any length of time. I was so proud of that, but now it seems that a lot of people have above 6 (and above me). Does this challenge seem to be voting 'higher' than the others? I had little dreams of getting in the 80% or higher range this time. Oh well, at least I'm getting higher than my personal best.

Me...competative...what makes you say that?
;-)

I was disqualified for Rusted, which was doing pretty badly anyway, holding a steady 3.8-ish. I didn't know to check the time/date stamp on my camera until after I had taken my shots for Rusted. Since I didn't think I would be ribbon material, and nothing about my shot should have led anyone to believe I had broken the editing rules, I'm really bugged that someone would choose to recommend it for disqualification. Why bother? I voted on a shot in this contrast that I was definitely suspicious of but I gave it the vote I felt it deserved (pretty high actually) and decided to let someone who knows a bit more about what can be done legally through editing make the call (I'm still working through what PS can do after 6 years of having it---one of these days I'll take a class or buy a book). Here's the original and the disqualified entry. I think it's okay to post them now that I'm out. What I did to edit the entry was crop, rotate to adjust the tilted horizon, adjusted brightnes/contrast, hue/saturation, and color balance. All this was done to the entire image. This was taken in Providence, on April 29th, outside the Brown University computer/language lab (and across the street from our favourite coffee haunt). This is my daughter, Ivy.

Might be time to brace yourself. I was looking thru past challenges with high numbers of submissions. A 5.8 is a great score, but it's not gonna pull top 20. Maybe top 40.

Of course, I could be way off (and I hope I am), just sharing what I noticed.

I was hoping to see more originality, there are so many macro photos that all look the same to me.

The reason I chose the entry I did was for that very reason. I figured, there was a lot of room for cliche and sameness with this Challenge and people might find my entry at least a refreshing change, if not particularly spectacular. Here's what I entered (it's been DQd) and what I considered entering. I was afraid the other two would be challenged, ironically, although I didn't break the editing rules. My other consideration wound up being entered in Abstract and is doing well for a first entry, holding steady at 5.6-ish. Comments and critiques are truly appreciated.

I remember seeing you submission, but I don't remember what I gave it, but I'm sure it was around a 4 or 5, and I'd like to explain why:

I agree that originality is sometimes rare on challenges, but I think photographic quality overrides everything else. Your photo is very original and it makes me smile, but the background is very distracting. The human eye naturally is drawn to bright things (ever find yourself gazing into the high beams of an oncoming car instead of looking away?). The sky in your photo is very over exposed, so the viewers eye is drawn to it like a mosquito to a flame. Obviuosly, the background is not the main subject of the photo, so you have two elements competing for attention. If the background wasn't so bright, I think even you would enjoy the picture much more.

Isolating the subject is sometime hard to do, and you have an awesome subject here, it's just not isolated. I hope this helps :)
