LOL... I knew something was going to be said about that. I could not figure out was it "out-weights" or "our-ways". So I guessed :)
And by the [weight] way you are doing a great job with your weight. I'm the one that is having a hard time losing pounds. |
Actually, it's outweighs ;) |

Jeb has made the point that it was not aimed at women, that it was an inside joke towards a friend.
With the current world economy and job markets, there is more than enough stress to go around. I suspect that external stresses are invading the virtual world of DPC, and that offenses are being seen, taken and responded to, where none were originally meant.
I believe it is unfortunate when anyone feels a need to leave. But only they can decide what is right for them. I wish those who need to leave, well. We will be here, if and when they come back. If they don't, perhaps both parties are better off. |
Actually, I think it was more the "'til he screams like a girl" part.
That'd be the most offensive part IMO.
It's a bad habit I have, doing that, because of the relationship I have with some of my friends here......they know me well enough to know that the gender reversal in my home and in my inner circle means that I'm the one to act more like a "girl" than either my wife or daughter......with all the typical chauvinistically attributed characteristics.
I'm the flaky, wifty, overly emotional, drama queen, needy, nutbag of the family.
(Living proof for Lisa's justification that love is not only blind, but stupid some days.)
But I cook, wash dishes, and grocery shop, so I'm worth keeping around since I also do plumbing, mechanical, and all 'round general repairs as well.
The sh*t you have to tolerate for good help......8>)

Oh... Crap! Now we can't even agree on what the offensive part is... ;-)
Wash, cook, dishes, and grocery shop are on the menu here too. We are a team, though so far my other team member has shown little penchant for car repair, killing large spiders, and crawling under the house to work on plumbing.
But then she puts up with me, so I guess we are even. Though she might claim I "So owe her..."

Well, I've been around since 2004 myself, and I honestly don't see that difference, at least on the drama side of the equation. We're perhaps more generally social and less specifically "learning oriented" than we used to be (probably a logical result of population growth), but as far as people bitching about how bad the forums are, and complaining about how unresponsive to members' desires the owners are, and people leaving the site in drama-filled forum posts and whining about scores and yada yada yada, well none of that has changed from my perspective.
Like someone said earlier, it's just a *beautiful* dysfunctional family we have here.

Did I mention that I restored cars for 37 years????
I will admit that I hate to paint.....either walls, or oils on canvas......8>)
I'm sure it has nothing to do with the fact that I have *ZERO* talent for either!

I've painted many a wall. Worked as a commercial painter for a few years, and decided anything else was better.
I've prepared a few cars for restoration. (Ran the hell out of them.)
Restored a few. Current money pit, er project, is an older Vette. My back and knees let me know how they feel about folding up to get in the car, but once I'm in, hey I'm 16 again for a bit.
I'm not really talented at very much, but I can schlock with gusto!

I know some people.....you get jammed up, let me know.
I have access to real stuff from people who've been around them and worked with/on Vettes since they were just cars.
If you're looking for Bloomington, it's that-away, but if you still know that a Vette's a Chevy, and you need something, drop me a note.
I can tell you a funny story about two Vette collectors, a frame up restored '67 300HP coupe, and me driving it to my shop through 14" of snow to use a dwell meter to tune a 327 so it ran right.
But it had authentic chalk marks on the frame!!!!!
Sheesh!!!

That sort of reminds me of that classic line from the Eagles song Hotel California, "you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave"

That was already used recently in a similar context in another thread. Great minds and all that. (not my mind though, I didn't use the line) |

I'm trying to get that adopted as the Team Suck motto.
You cannot quit Team Suck unless Fearless Leader says you can, and to my knowledge, he's never let anyone.

Oh man, authentic chalk marks!
Sorry, not one of the Bloomington crowd. For me, the place for a car is on the road. If I can't drive it, I'm really not interested. I can appreciate the craftsmanship of trailer queens and all that, but I wouldn't have one. My favorite song to play when I'm driving, is George Jones "The one I loved back then" aka "The Corvette song". It will put any Vette owner in their place. My 22 year old son does not hold the same passion. "Dad, it rides harsh, it rattles, and it's noisy, especially when you accelerate. It's just a brute force car." Oh, yeah! Exactly!
I could not tell you if the build sheet is still above the tank. I've never looked, and probably never will.

Naw... What it *shows* is that people can misunderstand people, or get misunderstood, then straighten it all out with a little self-deprecating humor, all *without* leaving the site in a major huff.
THAT's what it shows :-)

I've been here since 2005 - so I guess I'm becoming an old hand, even if I am currently not very active at submitting (and have never been much of a forum monkey). I do however log on to review the challenges and spot-check the forums for learning options most weeks. I love this site. I wish I could spend more time on it; but the nature of my personal priorities means that I take my family, friends, church and (by necessity) work more seriously. This does not really leave much time to either go shooting for specific challenges, or try to be clever on a forum.
Nonetheless my impression of how the site has evolved is relevant. Since I joined I have seen much change; but whether that change is me or the site is a much harder question. For instance - I'm convinced that there are far fewer challenging learning threads, but then again I know so much more then the daft photo-chap I was when I first joined. People have come and gone - great folk who added real value to the site, daft arguementative folk who seemed intent on picking fights. At a subtle level the personalities that engage in the forums has changed; but over that is the fact that a really great concept site; with a largely genuine, helpful, sharing and caring community has remained much what it has always been. |

I've been a member since 2004, I have not contributed nearly as much as I would like (trying to rectify that). I had some time away from the site due to work (about 18 months) so I have seen how this site has changed. I think it was, and still is a fantastic site for anyone who wishes to improve their photography.
The standard of photography is high.
The site is active, 42 people online as I write - Hidden Gems challenge had over 1000 entries, half a million images were viewed and 67000 comments were made
Members take a great deal of time to look at and comment on other peoples work.
Please tell me, where else on the web can you find anything like this site.
Sometimes members make comments that offend. If you wish to improve you need criticism. Everyone sees the world through different eyes, so I expect some members not to like my work (well actually I expect a lot of members not to like my work).
I try to remember that this is an international site so it is easy to misinterpret comments as they may come from members from a different culture to me. If after considering this I still feel offended by the comment I ignore it. Although I enjoy 50 members telling me they like my work, I will probably learn more from one critical comment, so you have to take the rough with the smooth.
This site must need massive input from the people that give their time to run and manage it., and to them I say thanks!
We each have our own strategy for coping with the world and its people. Mine is simple - I look for the good, avoid the bad and ignore the idiots ΓΆ€“ it works for me!

I probably don't vote as much as I could but I prefer to comment. I speak fairly openly and try to cut to the chase with what I think is good or bad in a photo. Often, I read my comments the day after I made them and I think them a little aggressive, but never unfair. I don't try to offend, and to be honest if somebody told me my photo was 'an out of focus image of an ininspiring subject' I'd take that comment and probably use it to improve. It's certainly a lot more use than no comment.
As far as the forums go, there are a few people with strong feelings about certain subjects. I try hard to have an understanding ear to others' posts, particularly as mine don't often make a lot of sense. No doubt one day I'll stop posting to DPC but I don't expect to make a grand exit about it.
Oh, and I took some excellent photos at the weekend that I won't share with you because they're all mine. I took them for me and they make me really happy. I'll even get some printed and framed for my own enjoyment and for the pleasure of those who visit my home. My visitors will love them too.
There is a world of photography outside DPC and it's a great place. So make your grand exit, go away and focus on what you like, free of restraint and criticism, improve, grow and develop, but come back and show us what you did so we can understand you and learn from you. |
