Thought I'd play with the crop more than anything, although the image size was already very small...

The two biggest challenges I faced when I was PPing this image:
- Noise suppression was killing the details a lot, and
- Highlight blown regions in top right of the gull's head were losing details.

Most of the entries handled one of the two, a few handled both very well. Also, I was surprised no one tried to convert it to greyscale:-)

Here are the results (according to me only.. please take them in the spirit that I am here to learn and if I am missing something, feel free to point that to me).

[Prash's PP BLUE Ribbon]
By Dirt_Diver, By Bear_Music

Dirt_Diver - Beautiful job with preserving details in the feathers, esp. in the originally highlight blown areas in top right of the gull's head. Love the sepia-ish tone. The only thing I would wish for is a bit more of noise removal in shadowy regions. But I understand that would also blur out some of the details. Please share the PP details so we can learn. Excellent!

Bear_Music - To be honest, during my first pass over the entries, I didnt think this one would make it in top 3 ranks. But at a second glance, something attracted me again and again to this image. What mesmerizing detail treatment!! I know it could use come noise removal. But still, couldnt help un-notice the details in there. Bear, please denoise it, and share again? That would be a great help! Question: What is Topaz adjust?

[Prash's PP RED Ribbon]
By Kelli, By Yo_Spiff, By chinarosepetal

Kelli - I love how smooth and noisefree your entry looks. A bit water-color-ish, but still quite professional look. Is Topaz a software or a plugin?
Yo_Spiff - I love how noise free it is... plus you managed to keep the highlit regions from blowing away the details. The BG-bird boundary is a bit uneven, but I understand that was done in a hurry. Thank you for sharing the PP details, great job!
Chinarosepetal - What creamy Bg and detail preservation! It prob needs a bit of noise removal, but otherwise, a great PP work. Thanks!

[Prash's PP YELLOW Ribbon]
By LVicari, By alans_world, By JimiRose, By tanguera

LVicari - Loved the overall smooth look. Details are decently preserved, highlit regions successfully treated in top right. Noise is still there albeit suppressed.
alans_world - I loved everything except the BG color and the slight softness. The highlit region was well treated IMO.
JimiRose - Great professional looking work except the highlights are still losing details.
tanguera - interesting crop and noise removal. Details still lost in highlights and smoothing.

[Prash's Special Mention]
By Art Roflmao

Art - Haha. Totally different as expected. Uber cool! Although I wouldnt go this way if I were to PP it, I love your take on it. Your entry could easily become part of that new board game's pamphlet. Great job!

The ribbons are on their way...

Congratulations, winners! And thanks to everyone who participated in this speed challenge. You have taught me so much it will keep me busy for a week trying it all out.

Peace!:-)

Topaz Adjust Is a plug in. They offer a free 30 day trial. It does similar to the clarify adjustment in PSP that I often use, but has much more in the way of options and fine control.
I know I used Topaz on this photo, but I selectively applied it to the 'copter only and not the sky.

I felt the edit by JimiRose had the most visual impact and best control of the noise.

Topaz has it's advantages but for those that don't like that surreal look it isn't for you. I've downloaded it before and I wasn't pleased with it. The example images to sell the product but don't let it fool you, it doesn't turn a boring image into a master piece. There is much more editing in those pictures than they make you think.

It does however help with area's that are blown out and helps with clouds but if you have lightroom you can do the same thing.

I think he used too much neat image. The bird's feathers lost a lot of details but your right there isn't that much noise.

I agree. In that particular regard he did not meet the "challenge" that Prash set as well as some others did. It's why I did so much selective editing on my try. I was trying to kill the noisy areas without hurting the feather detail. I always have difficulty choosing between detail or visual impact. Many of the adjustments that lend impact also kill fine details

In retrospect perhaps I should have only neat imaged the background layer - I've never been a fan of the "fake" look that neat image can produce, but there is no doubting that it IS what the vast majority perceive as professional and "correct", hence it's popularity on this site! Thanks for the comments Yo_Spiff and Dirt_Diver and the kudos from Prash.
