| Help! I'm trying to shoot tethered with my D90 connected via USB to the computer. For the life of me I can't figure out how to configure the camera so that shots are downloaded via USB instead of to the memory card. |

I have a D90 and always just put the card in my computer when I want to transfer. However, you may want to read this
If I'm reading it correctly, you will never be able to use USB to transfer files to your pc.

hmmm... haven't tried it yet, but

works with Aperture...
software download to work it with windows... ? |

just tried it (with aperture) and it works with no mods to settings
I tried it with the d80, which I had set to be recognized as a usb drive, and it would NOT work. changed the d80 away from usb "memory" to PTP setting and it worked. I find no settings on the d90 that seem to match, and the default condition worked for tethering.
It is possible, depending on your application, that it might not talk to the d90, and the referenced s/w download could be needed in that case.

See this thread here for a link to a free program that will allow you to shoot tethered (PTP mode, not mass storage mode, as mentioned earlier).
I downloaded it, got it going with my D80 and set up LR watch the destination folder for auto-import; took me all of 10 minutes to get working. It's very cool, and (arguably best of all) free.

I'm on a G5 imac and running Leopard 10.5.7 I downloaded the app (now called Sofortbild) and best of all it's free. (They do ask for a Paypal donation if you find it useful but not required at all). Setup to tether fire my D80 in 5 minutes. I changed the USB setting under the wrench icon to be PTP instead of mass and connected the camera to my Mac via both devices USB port. Once you set the mode you want to work in on the camera ( A, S, M, etc,) you can change the appropriate settings for that mode right from the interface such as shutter speed, aperture, white balance, ISO, image size/quality and even metering mode. It has an interval shooting mode and also a pretty slick bracketing mode where you tell the program what min/max shutter speed to capture and how many steps between speeds. I found this perfect for combining images for HDR. Great piece of software. Did I mention FREE? |
