I didn't sharpen at all and even used gausian blur of 1 to soften the outlines but I get those squiggly artifacts around it. The tiff looks good and the jpeg looks good when I preview it in my browser, yet when I upload it, there they are. Anyone know why this happens? I knew I could get silly-yets if given some time. Generally I'm happy with this shot. Thanks for any suggestions about getting rid of them.
edit:
Deleted because of compression. A new link for the new picture is posted below.

I'm guessing it's more about the quality of the save than oversharpened. If you oversharpen you tend to get a white halo around the edges, there doesnt appear to be any in your shot. Are you saving the image in the same way as you save others, and if so do they have similar problems?

I saved this one at a higher quality because I had uploaded one before that was done the regular way and it looked even worse. Could it be because of something that the site does to compress pictures even futher? This is the first time it's been this bad.

I think the problem is to much jpeg compression, sure looks like it.

The "squiggles" are JPEG artifacts. A right-click on your uploaded image shows a file size of 24068 bytes. That's really small for a 640x512px image, and is why you are seeing the artifacts. If that was not your original file size, it was prolly recompressed. I'm not sure what the rules are for portfolio images; I usually keep them under the 150k "challenge" limit and have had no problems. There are rarely any artifacts visible at that file size, and certainly wouldn't be for this image, which has large areas that are relativley detail-free.

if your photo is over 640 pixels wide when you upload, dpc automatically shrinks it, creating yucky artifacts.

Thanks guys. That must be the problem. It's larger than 640 and the site is doing it's duty by recompressing it. I'll try resizing the tiff to under 640 and re uploading that jpeg.
Konador, is there a file size that it looks for also? Say 150k?

Thanks. It looks much better now! At least the full size view does.

All the above explanations seem reasonable to me. So I will add another possibility that might be contributing...

Your in-camera software can generate edge effects in your original image that can be made worse during post-processing. Then conversion to .jpg only makes the matter worse.

If this is true in your case it can be easily fixed:

1-Select the objects with the disturbing edge effects.

2-Magnify and check the selection closely. You want the artifacts to be outside the object but the object itself to be selected properly. Adjust the selection to be sure both goals are met.

3-Inverse the selection. Now you have the disturbing edge effects selected but not the objects you do not want to disturb.

4-Use the clone tool to select properly colored spots beyond the artifacts to clone them out.

The joy of this technique is that you don't have to be careful with your edges during cloning since the object is not part of the selection. It leaves the object with a nice clean transition to its surroundings. It is also fast, even with complex shapes once the selection is made.
