...to be amazed by days like today. This sweet little girl was only 180 minutes old when this was taken (this afternoon). I don't care about critiques on the photo, I just wanted to share this moment between mom and foal. Speechless.

So cute, and it's really neat to have a photo journal of the development.

Thanks for posting. Very instructive for a lot of readers ... and a nostalgic piece for me (a no longer practicing veterinarian).

a great shot pedro. Is that B&W or is there a slight sepia in there?

Sorry Neil, i was out of town when you posted these. Those are indeed Belgians (the feet give them away). They're also heavy Horses (like Clydes), so your first guess was close.
That first shot is particularly awesome. I love how the foals are so tight with their moms. They run off and play like kids until they get too far, then they realize they're on their own and race to safety.

That foal that i posted inthe first picture I'm happy to say is healthy and happy. She gave a real scare though; she got very weak and couldn't nurse a few days after she was born. "Failure to Thrive" syndrome the vet called it (AKA I don't know WTF is wrong, but it doesn't look good syndrome). Turns out she had a bacterial infection that was hours away from killing her when a second vet figured it out. She's now well on the mend and doing wonderfully.

In her illness she took on a completely different personality than most foals. She's like a pet now. My 4 year old can lead her on his own safely, which is rare. We origianlly were going to raise her to sell as a brood mare, but i suspect she's now a part of the family for good.

Sorry for the commentary, but it's such a happy story for me i had to share it.

Oh, and Dan - that's a Bronze quadtone, similar to sepia. I have a downloadable action for PS if you're interested.

I got it here, and then tweaked it a little. I changed one of the browns to a blue, just because it gave it a little more edge. You'll need to use curves or levels on it to give it more contrast in most cases. have fun :)
