OK, quick question....
If you could recommend a book for a lightroom novice to use to teach it me from scratch and act as a comprehensive reference when I've got to grips with it, which would it be?
This is lightroom 2 BTW. |

Would you be ok with online tutotials? |

I'd second a recommendation for online tutorials. The program is not that complex, and the one book I bought on it was a waste of money and 70% fluff to fill the pages. |

I have Scott Kelby's book, but can't say that it added a great deal to what you can learn from the on-line sites. |

I really liked Scott Kelby's book compared with online because it walks through "every single function" of the program. The online stuff helps with the basics but there are a lot of little things in LR that the online stuff seems to miss and Scott's book covered.

I like books, too -- call me old fashioned.
I concur with the recommendations for Scott's books. He does have a particular "style" which you will either love or hate. I love it and find it very fun and entertaining; some people really hate it.
The "big two" LR (version 2) books are:
The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 Book by Scott Kelby
The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 Book: The Complete Guide for Photographers by Martin Evening
If you like a little humor in your reading, and don't mind groaning from time to time from seeing really bad puns (which again, I think are hilarious), Kelby's a good choice.
If you prefer a more college-textbook-feel, matter-of-fact style, Evening is a safe bet.
They both have the same content, and both are good, bordering on great, reference materials; although I find that for strictly "reference" issues (how to do this, what's the key for that, etc), that's where I think online resources really shine.
I'd advise caution, and even cast a strong recommendation against:
Photoshop Lightroom 2 Adventure by Mikkel Aaland
It's easy to find in bookstores, and is touted as a step-by-step guide and "how-to" for LR2... I spent quite a bit of time going through it at a local bookstore (luckily I had time to review it before I bought it), and was very disappointed. In my opinion, it's very poorly organized, has little to no actual useful/technical info (or what it has is so difficult to dig out of the text, it's worthless), and for all the really nice photos it has... it has no technical info about them nor how there were processed. Why show a bunch of examples of what you did with LR, but then don't tell anyone how you did it? Anyway, I digress. Check it out if you can; it might be a good book for some people -- I'm just not one of them.

I so loved Scott Kelby's books. I learned so much from them that I had questions about. I still have them in my living room. They are going to be late going back to the library! hahah.

The Martin Evening book is the one I have. To give an example of 'fluff' - 18 pages to discuss how to import images. That is typically a two mouse click process plus typing keywords in practical use. If that is the sort of teeth grinding detail you are looking for, then certainly it is a book worth picking up. |

Cool thanks all :-)
anyone who looks at the titles of some of my challenge entries will tell you I love a pun, so I might buy myself a copy of Kelby's book. Thanks for the online link too :-) |
