Been trying to figure out how to go from Austin to LAX to visit my sister for 5 days when my son is on Spring Break in March and the prices are outrageous. I am just shocked. I can't find anything under 458.00 round trip per person. GOOD GRIEF. Not American, Southwest, who are the usual carriers I choose. Even if I take a flight that stops, nothing changes price wise. I need an air fairy to give me a break. :~)

Why not try another airport in LA? I like Kayak.com as a good search site for flights. I think you can get in and out of Long Beach or Burbank as alternatives to LAX.
Edit: The thing I like about Kayak is the ability to see multiple day options, multiple city and airport options, all in the same search. The search looks through most of the airlines and the low price vendors as well. It is at least worth a look if you haven't tried before...

When is spring break? If you make one of your travel days Tuesday or Wednesday, there is a huge price break on Southwest (I'm taking advantage of that myself; I'm going to LA 3/18 for a few days). For example if you left on 3/17 Tue and returned 3/21 Sat the price is as low as $571 for BOTH tickets...
ETA
If it is the next week, you could go on Tue 3/24 coming back Sat 3/28 for even less, $469 for both tickets

Another one to try is Ontario, always good some good flights in there pretty cheap and its only 60 minutes or so inland from LAX. |

fly in before spring break starts. fly out after it has ended.
generally if there is a cause for major traffic for whatever reason - the rates go UP UP UP.
spring break here is the key word....

That doesn't sound right for this time of the year, I've gone to Australia from Seattle for an average $1200 Ret. at the peak times. What airline are you looking at?

Total price from LA to Auckland is $ 887 USD, March 2nd to March 17th, not bad at all, flying with Qantas (Return flight, includes surcharges and fees)

Yeah, we are kind of limited because somebody is picking us up, so other airports don't really work. I did look into Burbank, but the flights aren't any cheaper and you spend so much more time waiting on connecting flights, as there isn't a direct from Austin to Burbank. I've tried kayak and still can't seem to work it out. Thanks for the suggestions though. :~) |

We are booked to fly out from Wisconsin to Wellington in April. less than 1000US per person. My wife booked directly with Air New Zealand and used expedia.com for the domestic flight.

I almost never fly into LAX. Try Ontario or John Wayne, then take a bus to LAX or get a one way car rental (I've done that before too) |

I'm flying to Houston on Saturday. Round from Dubuque to Houston was only $236w/taxes and fees.
I just looked at American Airlines website. They have tickets for $79 each way to LAX from Austin.

Just priced for he and I the days we can go and it was over 1000 for the both of us on SW. I have specific days I can go, so that must be what is screwing us up. Spring break is only a week. UGH |
