This year I will be in Las Vegas
What goes on in Vegas doesn't always stay there: Earth Hour officially launched in Sin City at a press event featuring a Panda Bear and Vegas showgirls. The Strip will indeed go dark for the full 60 minutes—the only time the lights have been dimmed except briefly in 1998 in honor of Frank Sinatra's death.

Call me a hopeless romantic, or just a plain idiot, but I was just as dismayed to see this post slowly fall down the front page to obscurity last night, as I was at my cities response last year . Ok yea, March 28th is a long way away, but right now we in the US are calling to Congress to add Washington DC to the growing list of cities joining in. And the best part, they make it easy, Join, they send you a email, press the links, fill out your name and address, and they send out the well wrote letterâ€Â¦Ã¢€Â¦Easy

What difference does it make?
2007 Sidney Australia 2.2 million started it.
2008 world wide 50 million joined in.
2009.â€Â¦Ã¢€Â¦?

Turning out your lights for one hour, on one specific day, might be the best, and cheapest thing you can do to save a small blue green orb we call Earthâ€Â¦.

Just like last year, will make a point to TURN ON ALL the house lights that hour in order to insure not being accidentally counted as a sucker for this nonsense.

Seriously, if you want to do it to show your support for green causes, then fine. But don't delude yourself into the global warming, man is a blight on the earth, earth is going to end by man's abuse lunacy and thinking that this is actually going to help anything.

There is another concurrent thread on the false "debate" about global warming, so I'll just say thanks, Alan, for posting this.

Clearly you don't believe in the purpose. The mature and sensible thing to do would be to simply not participate by not changing your normal routine. Rational thought over knee-jerk schoolyard insecurity? Oh no!

and the biggest douche in the universe award goes to (drum roll please)...

Although I to feel this is a cop out to make people feel better for wasting energy every other day of the year. turning on all your lights because you afraid of some how being considered a participate of a non offensive event is sheer lunacy, obviously meant to get a reaction out of people.

Make that two. Really, this is about as effective as a "Support Our Troops" bumper sticker. BAM, POW, two sacred cows in one thread!

Hmm, that's too bad.... I find myself slowly but surely losing faith in our general ability as a race to be either rational or compassionate--whether that be with regard to ourselves, to others, or to the Earth/life in general. At the start of my college career I'd originally had aspirations to become a clinical psychologist...but now I'm realizing I don't think I'd be very good at it. There's too much of this kind of sh*t to deal with. Maybe I'll work with animals or something instead....

Except, of course, that supporting the troops is a good thing.

I prefer to be practical, not stupid. Sorry that offends you. I don't throw trash on the lawn. I conserve where reasonable. But no, I'm not a mindless sheep.

Believing that climate change is being accelerated by man does not make one a sheep. Nor does believing that man is a parasite on the earth that will eventually destroy their host. Neither does making a symbolic gesture in support of those beliefs make one a sheep.

Now if you want to talk about blind following then we could get into many other controversial subjects where you may hold beliefs which have no supporting evidence. Honestly, why do you always take such a holier than thou attitude towards those who disagree with you?

You and Sarah Palin need to get a room. Just because you don't believe in global warming does not mean you have to turn on ALL of your lights. That's jerkish and if anything, your neighbors will likely chew you out for doing so. You don't have turn off your lights if you don't want to, just don't be donkey's butt about it. Based on what I've seen in your past postings as well as this one, you are just an contrarian who just likes to get attention and make people upset...go make a thread in the rant forum already and butt out of people's celebrations for once.

...Anyway, I WILL be taking part in this and will also spread the word to my friends :)

I think maybe I was turned off this whole thread by your spelling of SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA

Or maybe it was that the biggest unnecessary city waster of Power probably in existance thought themselves important enough to hijack the launch............

I feel that as this has gone global the whole intent of Earth hour has been Lost.......Earth Hour is not about turning off your lights for an Hour. Earth Hour is about attempting to make us all consider the impact that UNECESSARY use of power has on the Environment. Turning off the Lights for an hour is Symbolic. Getting people to turn off the lights in the office every other night, as they don't need to be on, makes a difference. Earth Hour is about education, getting people to change habits, encouraging Businesses to change the way they light their offices at night and on weekends. The Turning off Lights for the Hour just gives the Platform, and publicity, that otherwise would be swept to the insignificant pages of the paper, and get us no-where......

I encourage everyone to participate in Earth hour, not by turning off your lights just for this one hour, but by reconsidering the unecessary power usage that you have, both at Home and at Work, and seeing if you can change your habits......

Hawkeye, if you're interested I've offered to address any specific issues you might have with the current state of climate science in the other thread. If you're going to say you don't buy it I think it's reasonable to say why you don't buy it.
