I am hoping someone out there can answer this question. How does one go about getting permission to shoot at a concert / event? I see the photographers in the pit and long to be one of them. I love music, I love photography and would love to combine the two. Any advice from someone who shoots concerts would be wonderful.

It is indeed, a fun wonderful thing. I've actually heard some whine and complain about "having" to go shoot a concert (I assume on assignment from their employer) -- yeah, I WISH more of us had those "problems." Geeze, if you can't enjoy shooting a concert, maybe you should get another job/assignment. ;) Annnnnyway, I digress...

Some reading is in order! Lots of great info here:

Read me (long, but worth it)
Read me (More technique, but some tips on getting creds also)
Read me (technicals, other references)

Do a search in the forums here for "concert," and you're sure to spend a few hours...

I also HIGHLY recommend Concert Photograpy: How to Shoot and Sell Music Business Photographs by Mulhern/Sievert/Wheeler.

D90 is a fine camera for it. If the lenses in your profile are what you're working with, I'd recommend considering buying or renting something faster, if that's feasible. With sensor on the D90, though, you might be able to push your iso up enough to get away with those lenses -- but you'll be a lot happier with something that opens to 2.8 or better.

Feel free to ask more specific questions -- there are good many of us on here who shoot concerts -- both for fun and more a little money, too...

Thanks. No, the lenses I have wouldn't cut it. If I could get a gig at a big concert I would definately have to spring for some faster glass. BTW here is an EXAMPLE of work I have done already. Those shots were taken with my old D50 and a 70-300 VR lens. Unbeleavabe but true, I was able to use fill flash for these from an SB600.

A lot of times you can get away with emailing the PR people at the label, with a sample of your work. Thats worked for some of the photogs I know. I luck out and usually am friends with someone playing, so I never get any guff.

What I did was contact the local radio station that was the main sponsor of a concert that they put on every year here.. told them I would love to do it and I would do it for free and give them a disk. They let me, I gave them the disk and I have been doing that concert every year now for 4 yrs (paid) gotta get your foot in the door somewhere.
