For me it was a shock to see so many B&W/desat entries. Seriously. My immediate reaction was that converting to B&W seems a bit of a cop out; an easy way of fitting the challenge without the difficulty of conceptualizing and shooting a grey subject.

Guess it goes without saying I interpreted this one as capturing the color grey (gray). I made a concerted effort to shoot a grey-in-color subject and can't help but feel less than rewarded given voting thus far (setting aside technical aspects, interest in subject, etc). Oh well.

Ditto :)

that is my interpretation...I didn't enter, but am voting based on that concept.

Seems to me that the challenge just said you should stay away from extremes of grey (b&w). I have a b/w photo that I shot in b/w for the challenge (no conversion). But...I used a range of greys to express my photo rather than some gray mixed in with blacks and whites...I think that is what the challenge was about. I don't think you should down vote photos because they use b/w technique - - the subject and tones are most important --they should all be in the mid range and not on the extreme sides of things.

Why didnt anyone tell me about the curse that whenever you post your challenge scores the score goes down?

I dont know if I will post my whole score anymore. I think I will just post the first number and leave the rest to imagination. Will that stop the curse or should you just not post at all? hahahah.

As far as the argument here this is what SoulMan1978 said when he asked for this challenge: I think we've had most of the other main colours as challenges before now and I thought to myself: What's one colour that's hard to make interesting? Grey. Photograph the colour grey.

To me this does not mean to desaturate to grey or make it grey with black and white. It means to photograph the color of grey. The description of the challenge was different a little then what SoulMan said but to me it was pretty plain and a lot of people probably didnt read what SoulMan had to say. I can see using white balance to adjust but I cant understand desaturated or converted pictures. I just wanted to share my opinion.

This was entered under the minimal editing rules (Cropped and Sharpened) at my discretion. this way I did not move away from capturing gray.

But Brian, there's no cropping in minimal editing ;)

As a colorblind person (monochromacy mind you) I just wanted to point out that I think you all did an incredible job. Really nailed the challenge perfectly, each and every one.

Since you quoted my post (without necessarily quoting me specifically) ... I felt compelled to note that I'll not be voting this challenge. Thus, I can only be affected by voter interpretation and sentiment ... but will not be affecting others.

As for the comment on your interpretation, I would simply point to the challenge description which says explicitly "Capture the color grey somehow." It doesn't say *create* the color grey or submit a grey image; it says unequivocally capture the color grey.

*shrug*

I still enjoyed the challenge of capturing a primarily grey subject and happy with the resulting image regardless of how it's voted on DPC. :)

Oh Boo Hoo, but anyway you get my drift

I love it that the challenge can be interpreted so many different ways. I did not read 'capture the color grey' to mean 'using a camera, shooting in color only, compose a scene which contains an area of grey color.' As a further hint, advanced editing was allowed. None of the dictionary definitions of 'capture' mention a camera as the only means. I thought of it as capturing the expressive variety of the color grey without using white or black to manage edge contrast. I was looking forward to some dreamy, foggy Steichen-esque comps. It seems we are all going to be disappointed this time. I haven't voted yet, & I don't plan to vote DNMC on everything that doesn't match my interpretation of the challenge.

My image has varied between 7.0000 and 4.5000. That is a record spread for me... for vote counts after 30. Currently, I'm well above the low, as the "1" DNMC voters are being diluted by the voters who are judging based on their even-handed and open-minded interpretation of the Gray challenge description. I think there's a pretty good chance the algorithms will have a record sweep of the detritus votes on this challenge.

Oh, and zero comments on the host of sub 4 votes. I do want to point out that we are in Advanced Editing, not Basic Editing. Challenge interpretations can widen the pool of qualifying images. Or, some can redefine/narrow the challenge to the benefit of their own entry.

This is what is known as "critically damped", and it is clearly settled on a a score--pretty easy to "project" the outcome on this entry :-)

I'm in agreement with the BW conversions. I read and re-read the description and to me it should be a COLOR image of grey. I'm voting accordingly. :~)

HAHAHA - I hate to be the DNMC police so I pretty much just found the color ones and voted on them, to get to 20%. I found one that I thought was awesome, and since I couldn't tell if it was a conversion or not, I gave it the benefit of the doubt because it is a stunning image. (ok, start throwing rocks at me now)
