This has been a great thread on comments. I'm not a photographer at all- didn't touch a camera that wasn't a point and shoot until last year when I realized how noisy all of my pictures were. I'm a techie and an artsy person (on the musical side)- so photography has been a nice outlet for me.

In response to a few things on this thread- I normally see an upswing in my score the last few days of voting, but I was hit pretty bad today. I received a series of 6-8 votes averaging around 3 while my score has been around 5.5 - (200 votes so far). They all came at once too... but it's ok =o) It's bound to happen at some point during the week.

ThingFish- I appreciate the comment and mini-dialogue we had. I think it's always hard for me as a voter- there are shots that are obviously related to a subject, but because of the obvious nature, they tend to be overused/played out themes... then some people think out of the box and the relation is not seen as quickly. I think that sometimes people don't take the time to look at a shot and think about it. Honestly, I'd love to take the time to vote and comment on every shot, but I sit and stare at shots before I vote, and if I comment I take even longer.

I wouldn't just listen to a song once, or walk past a painting... I want to hear the riffs, see the brushstrokes, and here on DPC I want to take time to soak in a shot that I know people took time to take. I've been hit with a few "Sorry don't see it" comments in the past for "outside the box" shots that i thought were pretty obvious. One being my affluence shot (Golden Gate bridge juxtaposed with a house to look connected)- after a crappy comment about how it's a photo contest and "It's not a take a picture and think of a funny title" comment, I PMed the commenter. He said he didn't even notice that there was a house in the picture.

I would honestly love more comments because I really want to learn more about this beautiful medium of expression and thought... and I don't want to start taking shots that aren't fun and challenging to the topic because that's not who I am... so I take my scores and my comments in stride... knowing some people score to help themselves, some score to get through them all and some take the time to think and vote... and the same goes for comments. hopefully we can all give some good comments (try to give 3, or 4 or 5 for every 1 you receive... pay it forward!) and maybe we'll get more good comments back.

ThingFish you do a great thing and I think everyone appreciates- especially in this thread. =o) Keep up the great work.

kinda bouncing between 5.4 and 5.3
i wish when someone gives a 1 they would state why they dislike the image to give it that score
how can you learn if ppl dont comment on what they see as so bad
and also why they deem a 10 to be so good as well

Im going with the X. Whenever I post my scores in challenges for some reason the score goes down. I think there is some kind of curse to posting scores so I am going to be a little stingy from now on. hahah.

This is on my profile page for sure. Wish I had thought the title through a little better, maybe then I wouldn't have gotten the STRONG STRONG STRONG DNMC vote.

It won't make my profile page but I'm happy with the score. At least I'm out of the 4's this time! :D

ok, how does this work?

after all, the end of my day is not the same as the end of the day in california. When do the results actually get posted?

Eastern Standard Time...which is where the server is. So, in...like 72-ish minutes.

Or we could just have rollover NOW, and the last minute trolls wouldn't have a chance to get at my lovely shot....:(

Wendy, the end of you day is not even close to the same day for me.
As Jessi Said, Midnight, USA, Eastern Standard time (Jessi, Eastern Satndard time is a completely different time for me)

So at the moment. Midnight Tuesday Night, USEST (ie rollover) is 4pm, Wednesday, AEDST (Australian Eastern Daylight Savings Time)

You confussed Yet??????

I think limerick is in ribbon zone:)

My score sucks, I just hope it doesn't effect my average. But heck first entry in well over 2 years.

Fingers crossed but you never know around here. I am hoping for top ten like Sempermarine tho.

Wow that was so cool to see it change over! Congrats to the top three! I got a new personal best and am very happy with that!

Congrats on your finish Limerick. Nice job! And thanks for your nice comments on mine. Glad you liked it! I was also happy with my finish. 14th on my second entry was pretty good, although I must confess I was secretly hoping for top 10. I wanted a little honorable mention badge in my profile. lol Now I feel a lot of pressure to improve so I can top it and get into the top 10!!! Somebody help me!

hahah. I feel your pain. I feel pressure to! A lovely picture and should have scored higher. 14th is great! I think my first was low on the totem pole and my next one was disqualified. So 14th isnt bad!

Thingfish,
Another thing that irks me is that in some of my comments I have asked a question of some sort pertaining to the entry but not once has any of those questions evoked a response. That shows me that the photographer does not really care and is probably more concerned with his/her score and getting as many comments as possible and could not be bothered to respond to any interest shown in the entry by providing an answer.

We have been chomped on enough times to know that it is taking your self esteem in your hands to answer a comment during voting. In many cases it is perceived as trying to manipulate the voter by answering during voting. While that answer may not feel great, it is, at least, a reason.

Thingfish

Sorry, I never made it to your shot. I definitely would have scored it at least a 7, most likely an 8. Not only is it a great shot, but it's a hard one to capture right (without using HDR). But then again, I work in a church, I know how quiet it can be during the week.

At the same time, your post here is a bit ironic- because you left a comment of, "I don't feel it fits the challenge very well as to me it does not convey much of a feeling of silence." on my post- which is like what you said, if anyone visits a basketball court during the middle of the week, when kids are in school, adults are at work, and no pick up games are being played- it seems eerily quiet.

Don't let your ranking get you down, it was a great shot that you should be proud of.

In regards to comments- I'm trying to get an early start this week- I'm almost 20% voted and commented on one of the challenges this week. The culture of this website will only change if people are willing to do the work without reciprocation.

I'm sorry you're disappointed--but you have to realize that people see things in different ways. Your comment on my photo stung for a long time. You said you liked the photo, but it didn't convey silence. Being a mother of two children (who are never quiet by the way), a sleeping child is the ultimate picture of silence. But subjects like these are so personal. It never occurred to me that people wouldn't see my picture the same way I did.

The biggest thing that helped, though, was looking at a few of the photos from other competitions. Some of the photos that were absolutely incredible received some 3's as well. I can't imagine, in a million years, how some of these photos could have received 3's. But it made me feel better about mine getting some.

Unfortunately, I'm going to have to get much thicker-skinned this time around. I spent a week trying to get the perfect shot for "end". This was my chance, it's a great shot, I was ready to see 6's this morning... My average is 5.0.

I forgot to mention -- so I'm adding this into my original message -- I agree with your frustration on the 1's 2's and 3's. I reserve 3's for photos that really suck. I don't think I've ever given a 1 or a 2. 3's already way below average, so I don't feel a need to slam anyone that hard.
