Slowly creeping upwards and upwards. Just under the magic 5.5 that means it's just an average photo! Looks like mine will be finishing next to vawendy's and MQuinn's. |

I have processing issues, and I know it. Blech. Should've entered the other one -- what was I thinking...? |

Thingfish--- You are my only comment, and I wanted to say thanks for giving me an honest critique. You were right when you said that people are easily offended when you criticize their shots. I see that all the time on these boards with people screaming and crying about monitors not being calibrated and yada, yada, yada. I am not easily offended, and I want honest comments when people look at my photos because I am new to this and I want to know how I can better. You gave my photo a 5, but more importantly, you told me why. This is how I feel I can learn from this site and its the reason I am here, some of the comments you made on my photo, I had already thought about myself, but didn't know if others were seeing it that way. Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to comment on my photo and everyone elses. I know that it is very time consuming to look through all the photos and comment on them. I felt that your comment was honest, accurate, fair, and most importantly, I took something from it. Thank You |

I got a nice comment from Thingfish to. Thank you.
I wanted to mention the calibrated monitors. I have had a few comments about my pictures having things in them that I couldnt see on my monitor so I finally switched monitors today. My other one was so old it couldnt be calibrated but now I have one that can be and I calibrated it today. If it wasnt for those comments I wouldnt have known so I am happy for those comments.
I want to thank everyone for comments on any of my pictures. I like getting them all no matter good or bad because they can all be learned from. I wish I had more time to make comments tho but I have to work on making some time for that. Thanks again to every body! |

oh my gosh, the 3's are out in force for the last 12 hours. dropping... dropping...
I hope I get thicker skinned on the next challenges. Photos have to really suck for me to give them a 3--I figure that's way below average. Even though I know my shot's average, I can't see it way-below average.... hmmm.
I also wish when people rate something so very low, that they would comment. So far there's been about 9 threes that I know of--and not one has given an explanation as to why.
ok, there, I got it out of my system. |

Yeah, mine rose steadily for the past week, and now has started to drop again. Guess people are feeling critical today.
Question for you all--I am new to the site and don't exactly know protocol on here. I left a comment on a photo in another challenge that included a compliment, followed by my reaction to the pic, worded as diplomatically as I could. The photographer sent me a pm reaming me for my comment and asking that I change it because it might offend the model (my comment was not directed at the model, rather the setup of the shot). I wrote back, explained my perspective, and agreed to remove the comment in order to avoid hurting the feelings of the model, then removed my comment. This person wrote to me again and told me that my comment had been unnecessary and tactless. Is this normal on here? If so, this may explain the paucity of comments. I am certainly reluctant to leave constructive criticism if I am going to be criticized for it. |

I didn't attack the photographer. I actually said that I thought it was an interesting concept, but that I thought it conveyed a sense of threatening and that it looked sinister. This was a shot that was clearly intended to be tender and sentimental, but it did not convey that to me. My 10-year old daughter happened to look over my shoulder while I was commenting and she was horrified. We had to have a discussion about what was probably intended versus what was actually pictured. I cannot say too much because I do not want to identify the photo since it is still in the voting phase. I made my comments based on some advice in the tutorials that voters should let the photographer know what their emotional reaction was to the pic, so that the photographer is better able to gauge the effectiveness of their work. I guess I will stick to the positive. I just made many low votes in the Grey challenge (kind of out of character for me--I usually vote pretty high) and did not tell them why because I don't feel free to speak honestly. I joined because I thought this would be fun and a way to improve my photography skills. I don't want a bunch of sniping and complaining. I already have four children. Get enough of that at home! |

When I post my score it normally drops, but I've been dropping like a rock all day, so I am going to post in hopes that it will stabilize the voting.

I on occasion get PM's from people I have commented on their Photos. I will not remove a comment, change a comment, or change a score as a result of a PM. I will at times PM the person back with additional information regarding why the comment was made.
There are some people here that do not take criticism well, while most of the others want honest feedback. I encourage you to keep commenting, both positive and negative, to as many photos as you can. I hope what should be an isolated incident does not stop you from commenting honestly in the future.
I also find it interesting that in many cases, the people that react to comments are also the ones complaining that they are not getting comments as well...... |

I don't think it's the norm for people to send caustic PM's in response to a comment left on a photo. But it does happen, unfortunately. It's a shame you removed your comments because i would like to have read what your reaction was to the photo.
There is an option for you to vote anonymously so that people cannot see who leaves a comment during a challenge. That would be something for you to consider.
Kudos to you for taking the time to leave comments on an image. I hope you will continue to do so. |

Mine is beating yours by a bit, but, it too, has been dropping all day. I'm still too superstitious to post the whole thing.

Is this normal? do people usually vote things down on the last days? I'm still dropping, more like a boulder. I've been steady but rising for the last 3 days, and now the bottom is dropping out.
regarding comments: I'd rather get a comment that I get aggravated with, than a "they gave me a 2--and they didn't even say why!?" I think it's kind of cowardly giving a very low vote without explaining.

I've alwyas noticed an upswing towards the end of voting. I'm still dropping too. |

Wow!...20 comments...I am disappointed. I handed out comments for every entry but only received 3 in return. My entry must be considered not worth commenting on. :(

Thingfish, PM me the name of your entry (and description if it's not a unique title) and I'll give you a careful comment. I respect your complete, well thought out comments & you deserve one or two yourself.
I often see dropping scores at the end. When people do their initial voting, they often group in 4, 5 & 6, then go back and drop or raise scores within the bottom and top groups. When you get those voters who are getting their voting done at the last of the voting window, they often don't have the time to do the fine tuning that others have done. It especially hits those with high scores. If you are in the high 6's or 7's, you need 7s & 8s just to keep even. Without the upward bump, those scores tumble. |

ThingFish,
If you pm me, I will be happy to comment, too. I just don't know what to say unless I have a strong reaction. I am very green. Just call me Kermit, I guess! |

Rjkstesch and Teranb (Kermit)
Thanks for offering to do that. It's a very nice gesture on your part but I am sure you will understand if I don't take you up on your offer even though I am disappointed in the lack of comments my entry has generated. The process must go it's natural way and if I get few comments so be it. It will only spur me on to produce something more "eyecatching" for my next challenge.
Regards
Jan
