Another thing you will certainly have a question on is how people know what the individual votes were. We use a spreadsheet to figure it out. Hawkeyelonewolf has a good one you can find on his profile page.

Also you might find this thread to be useful: The Unauthorized Beginner's Guide to DPC

As for my own score, I was pleasantly surprised this morning:

Lemme guess - you stepped out of the box on this one, yes? :-) Fun to step out of the box (I should know) but definitely gotta take the score with a grain of salt (or a truckload full) when you do!

OK, I'm going to bed now. And when I wake up I want to see my score back above 6. Got that?! :)

Yeah... but this is one of those where it's clearly meeting the challenge and not shoehorned. Just frustrating that instead of "Hmm... Well, yeah, it IS a tree and I never thought of that, but yeah it qualifies", you get hammered with sub-4 scores.

But when you do a photo for (another) challenge and say 3 others had the same idea, you get slammed because you're NOT original. By that token nearly every entry in this challenge is not "original" because they are all subtle variations on the exact same thing.

Not griping as much as observing the inconsistencies...

Started off at a 7.5, went up to an 8.5 by the time I went to bed last night, I was tickled pink with it being at 7.75. Knew it wasn't going to stay at that range of course but, was hopeful of a personal best!

Just took a break to come in and check and saw this score. :(

The "overnight" (in my part of the world anyways) voters were brutal and it's still going this morning.
Forget my tea....going to have a drink at lunch! ;-))

Ah well....the wonderful news is that I have a FAVE!!! That makes me happy!!

I guess in this case, the only differences could be in who did it best??? This is a particularly hard challenge to not only be "original" on but, also to vote on. There are certain challenges I'll only comment in and not score. This may be one of them. However, my hat is off to so many creative entries. Finding a single tree, especially with no others in the background is particularly difficult. Finding one, alone, with an interesting background is even more difficult. I had to contort myself to get an angle to capture a single tree and not get any others in the shot. I salute everyone who tried this challenge!

(I think quite a number of us are still recovering from frost bite ;-))

I've seen a few with multiple trees in the shot, but with the single tree as the MAIN subject, it still fits the challenge just fine, IMO. Now if the main subject were a cluster of trees or a forest, that might be different.

Wow...just got to say, glad I didn't put my tree photo in the contest! There are some really good ones. Went out, got frost bite, vehicle broke down and didn't get a single shot I thought was good enough : >(

I'm gonna go do some voting...**don't tell the boss**

Yeah, Steve...I agree with you that having other trees in the background is fine. I was merely making mention of the difficulty in finding a tree shot with no other trees in it or around them. A number of shots found that situation and shot it. I was simply making a statement that it was difficult to find a "stand alone tree". Nothing more. :)

Doh! I missed the cutoff. I saw some message about the board being down so some deadlines were extended by a day so I thought I had more time.

The wrong damn challenge to try and "get back into the swing of things" on. I've never been good at trying to make simple objects look exciting.
