Common sense.

It's a photo contest, and obscuring photos from the voters in any way defeats the purpose. It's more likely the "feature" would be removed than the contest compromised. Common sense.

Question: Do you set the limits for participants to age 18 and above? If not, then there's a bit of a moral obligation to filter, isn't there? :)

yes... but did you all forgot about this little guy??? Minor waivor

parents of minors on here should be completely aware that there is the occasional nude photo. and if you disagree with that then dont sign the waiver

I used to be a whizz at copying my parents' signature. :)

That is STILL not an argument for the site becoming a babysitter. It's only an argument for that kid getting his ass whooped.

Ed, you and I both know that the "waiver" that can be signed in here has more to do with DPC owners not getting their rears sued off and nothing to do with protecting any minors. :) If the genuine interest were in protection of the child, the site would forbid nudes and graphic images totally.

That said, if you were reading along here :), my main message was that this entire thread got off of the original topic that the thread orginator has posted....is there a way to turn off the nude photos? The rest of this discussion got sidelined into a whole other tangent. In bringing up the point of children (which someone else brought up and I JOKINGLY commented on with a JOKE comment), I was simply making a response to something someone else had said about children seeing the graphic nature of some of the photos, not that the site has to become a babysitter for kids. I didn't have a problem with the nudes at work. My bosses actually like nudes! *grin, smile*

So, can I clear this up right here...I am NOT arguing that the site should babysit kids. I am NOT arguing that nudes shouldn't be permitted. I am NOT arguing that there even SHOULD be a filter.

What I am saying is that the original poster asked a legit question. He asked...COULD there be a possible filter for nudes for situations like he's dealing with? I asked if we could simply answer that question without stomping on the guy as a "prude"! Go back in this thread and see where it got to the point of people calling him a "prude" and telling him that he simply should participate in forums while at work! LOL

So, still wanna have a "go" at me here, Ed? *smile*

Edited for grammar...I do speak English....I think??? ;)

However, as a side note to this discussion and since we've brought up the idea of the Minor Waiver....

In looking at that waiver,(now that it's been brought up), someone might want to consider putting in a clause that states to the parents right on that form, that there ARE photos that may be graphic in nature and intended for adults only and not "buried" in some long "Terms of Use" that takes a day or a lawyer to read. Even I can't be bothered to ramble through that stuff to find if it even exists in there.

More often than not, parents signing that waiver will look pretty surface at the site and in looking at the Home Page, more often than not, the winning photos are generally not graphic in nature unless there's been a nude challenge. The more graphic photos tend to get buried. Kids find them. :)

Just a thought since this issue has been raised.

I predict this discussion is gonna cause the announcement of the Nude V challenge tomorrow...

How sad for me... lol

Shall we steer you away from apples then too? ;-) *WINK*

Gee no way, I love apples. Especially the big red Delicious variety. Again, let's blame it on the nuns.

I was never having a 'go' at you, but you sure do like to jump at responses personally. You've shown that time and time again ;)

I'm merely countering your individual points. Fact of the matter is, in the end, the site is not here to babysit. Whether that means doing something so you don't get in trouble at work (where if you can't arrange something with your boss/supervisor regarding the odd nudity shot on DPC then you shouldn't be doing DPC at work), or doing something so your child doesn't see something you don't want them to see over your shoulder (and YOU brought that up, nobody else did), the responsibility lies with the user and the user alone. Not the site.

Period.

To try and make it seem like you weren't the one taking things down paths that weren't relating to the OP is pretty classically self-delusional.

Not that Im a prude at anything its just that I look at this site while at work.

You've seen one of the big flaws of this site... If we don't want to see nudes, we don't want to see nudes and the site and its owners should respect that. Instead they force it upon you even during voting.

I know how you feel. I hate it when I watch TV or listen to the radio and all I get is censored material without a way to turn it off. Wanna switch problems?
01/25/2009 07:52:00 PM · #84
Simple solution. If a user has the nude filter on and a challenge has a nude submission, then they are not allowed to look at the submitted photos during voting, nor vote on any photo.

Great point!!! There's nothing like a 10 year old, standing behind you, unnoticed and having a nude (especially, some of the more recent ones), pop up on screen. They'll either stand there, quietly transfixed, jaw open, or go running and screaming...."Mom...Dad's looking at porn again!!!!" ;-) Edited for a grammatical touch-up

Hey, Ed...if you're referring to THIS comment as me being "The One" to start the child comments....take a look at HOW this was said....A JOKE!!!! :) If you can't see that, then I would suggest that perhaps, it may be YOU who has jumped to conclusions. *smile*

The same holds true to your "leaping" to my comment about "having a go"! *SMILE* How many :)'s and ;)'s can I put in to make that more plain? Heck, I even spell out *SMILE* and *WINK* most of the time to be extra clear. So, who is leaping there?! *GRIN, WINK, SMILE* I think you just tripped over your own feet. *CHUCKLE*

And, as for taking things personally and this being "classic", seems to me that a couple of days ago, you had no objection to my comments in another thread! *SMILE, WINK, GRIN* Or, does that only work when I am agreeing with you? *SMILE, WINK, GRIN, CHUCKLE* :) ;)

Really, I DO get a kick out of you, Ed! *SMILE* You do make me chuckle.

LOL.....Morgan....I think a lot of people do blame it on the nuns. Thankfully, I didn't have to endure that. I did get whacked by one, once...for talking in church when I was a kid. She packed a mean punch! No wonder people have nightmares about them! ;-)

I'll pass you one of my Red Delicious apples...NO SNAKE! ;)

Why does his simple question have to turn this into an entire debate that ends up calling him a "prude" or pounding on him for having asked the question? He was asking for help and a potential solution so that he could go on voting and commenting when he has time at work. Many of us don't have free evenings or weekends due to family obligations and work breaks and lunches may be our only time. I don't see why this simple question has to be turned into a lynching!

You put more winkies and smilies in every post you make than a weekend pajama party of 13 year old girls with cell phones. Whether you're serious or not. I've long given up trying to determine when you're serious, so I just tackle whatever points you make and leave it at that. More often then not, they address the issues in the end anyway.

Suffice it to say, it doesn't really matter to me, and I take nothing personally. I just counter-point and leave it out in the open for people to take or leave how they see fit.

Also, I'd suggest a nice cup of warm milk, it might help that hyperactivity a little ;)

That's the nature of humanity. Ignoring it works better than worrying about it.

I blame it on Craig Simpson's 'color commentary' on the NHL All-Star game. His mind-numbing monotone would make Ghandi confrontational.

Is it my imagination, or would it just be easier to deal with the issue in the way that makes the most sense without asking the site to change?

If there's any possibility that what you may encounter on a site may offend someone, then doesn't it make sense to view it at some other time, some other place?

Doesn't matter if it's work, home around the kids, at a coffee shop, whatever.....this is a photography site where nudes are a fact of competition.

Have some respect for the other photogs, and the people around you......if in doubt, don't take the chance.

Hey guys,,,I'm really sorry, I really didn't mean to add this much fuel to the fire, it was more of a joke. I don't have the problem at work, (so long as the key words relating to nudes aren't in there, my work filter will lock me out of the site if so) my kids are all grown up and my wife just says yuck....This has been discussed many times through out the years. Hell even on the porn sites all they ask you if your 18 or not and you can go right in. (not that I've gone to any porn sites before). Personally I believe it's up to the individual to monitor this situation and be prepared to see nude images in challenges....Sorry again, deleting my original response.

Get with the program, people.

But then you lose out on the excitement and danger that one could actually pop up when you least expect it.
