It was a great challenge full of awesome images so many should be very proud of. I noticed something a little odd with my entry. I had been hovering a little above 7 most of the week and occasionally dipped as low as 6.9650 when I looked. At less than a minute to go in voting I was at exactly 7.0 oddly enough and I figured I would end up at 7+ after the scrub. Instead my score went down to 6.8571. I'm not ungrateful certainly to be where I ended up, but before the scrub I was just squeaking in the with only my second 7 and what would have been a top ten place.I'm pretty new hear and have only seen an upward trend after the scrub- maybe that isn't always the case? Or maybe someone slipped in one of those threes I got with a couple of seconds to go?
Still happy :-) |
I had accidentally voted 10s on three images while doing my comments, so I thought maybe when they scrubbed them you got caught up in that, but your shot wasn't one of the three I'd accidentally voted on.
I, err, DO apologize for those three other people that I did have a 10 vote get scrubbed on though. Sometimes my mouse hates me and hits the 10 instead of the >> when I'm commenting. (It's easier for me to comment by bringing up the full photos and skipping through them, instead of wasting so much time bringing up every thumbnail and then backing out and hitting the comment button. So this happens. *hides*) |

Ah, thanks for the explainers guys :-) I bet the scrub pulled out some high votes from people who didn't get to 20% as Hawkeye suggested. No worries, I'm happy :-) |

If you're using Firefox and have Greasemonkey + the voting script, tapping the right and left arrows moves you through the images without that risk. Used to happen to me all the time, "accidental 10's", but no more.

I only have Greasemonkey on one of the computers I use, but where is this voting script of which you speak? |

At rollover my number of votes went down by 12. (luckily my score only went down by .001) |

A repeat from another thread but...
According to the results of the 'BEST of 2008' results, the Canon 350D with an aftermarket lens produced the best pic of the year.
So much for spending thousands on top level equipment! |

One of our members writes these scripts to enhance our pages, I can't remember who offhand right now but I'm sure somebody can point you at his page where he has his various scripts, they are cool.

if you look at the profile of smurfguy and then click on "dpc mods" I believe you will find what you are looking for. :) |

If you go to your preferences you can set up keyboard voting and move through images by hitting left or right keys. Here is an admin announcement about it from awhile back. Maybe I am missing something, but I don't think it is a DPCmod.

Wow! That was great fun! Really pleased i came 132nd with a 6+ score on my first challenge and it being such a tough one as well!! Some amazing photographs and i was blown away by so many of them. Really glad i joined the site. I can see this is going to be a huge amount of fun! Onto the next challenge!!
Incidentally, my choice for the Blue was this one that i think is one of the most amazing photos i've seen in a long time...
But the actual blue of the of the cathedral was in my top five.

I just took a look through the top 250 shots. And all I can say is WOW. I purposely didn't look through the shots or vote because I didn't want to see how badly my photo would do in this challenge. I'm happy I squeaked by in the top 50%, but after seeing how great those photos were, i wouldn't have been surprised to have finished lower. No wonder i was excited for the best of 2008 challenge...I knew there would be some amazing photos. Great job to everyone who entered. |

It should be interesting. |
There are still lots of 1's and 2's in almost all entries, even in the top 10.... I guess the scrubber algorithm needs tweaking....

Why would that be?
The vote scrubber does not just drop just the low votes randomly or even know what is or isn't a good photo.
Nor should it.
It should just remove votes from people who didn't make the 20% minimum... |

I thought it could also recognize when a person would vote 1's and 2's to almost all entries to bring down other people's averages....
I'm still amazed how, with all the great photographs and photographers on this site, there are users with an Avg Score Cast of 4 or less.....

wouldnt it scrub away the person who gives all 9s and 10s? it seems only fair... |

You're absolutely right, but I guess it would be someone from Site Council who could tell us how this works.

They're not going to tell you exactly how it works. This would then lead to the potential to figure out how to keep your votes from getting scrubbed and still vote unfairly. That said, I think it's pretty safe to say that obviously bizarre voting patterns are probably scrubbed (like all 1s, all 10s, all 9s and 10s, all 5s, etc.). |
