You have commented on 50 images (9%) in this challenge.
And another one bites the dust!
Alright. 50 comments done, and that concludes my goal for the Best of 2008. It's been fun and crazy once again, and I'll see y'all in February for January's Free Study. |

Only 216 votes for the challenge with 531 entries??? I understand some users don't vote for the challenge they participate, but I didn't know there are so many users like that. Come of people get off your butt and start voting. |

Most people won't vote 100% either, so that affects vote numbers. It's a lot of entries to vote on, especially if you don't want to machine gun it and be unfair to both the photographer and yourself. |

You can also expect a fairly decent change with the vote scrubbers...be it good or bad. I am sure lots of folks went through and voted on those shots they loved...but if they did not get to 20% which is over 100 images in this challenge, their votes will drop off at rollover. It should be interesting. |

I agree with both of you. But in order for user to decide which shot is better, she/he has to view all pictures. I don't think it take long time to vote on it if you view the picture. Unless.....users go by thumbnail....(Note to self), while submitting for the challenge, make sure the thumbnali also looks appealing. |

That's only one way of thinking about it. Many people subscribe to the theory that every photo stands on its own and should be judged as such, so they don't really care if they see all the photos. Many others, like you, use ranking to score. Each method is great as long as you're consistent about it and judge honestly either way. :)
Also note that you don't have to cherry pick the thumbnails to vote under 100%. Every person's photo order is randomized, so you just have to click on the first thumbnail of the page every time you bring it up and vote on as many as you want to or can (or even skip through what you don't care to vote on with the >> button)

and down goes my average. I'm pretty happy with this one though, regardless of the scores. |

For some odd reason, if I had a 5.6, I'd be absolutely ecstatic and consider it a resounding success, but only having a 5.5 makes me feel that this entry has been a colossal failure.
Ahh, arbitrary goals, why do you hate me so? |

You know, I was kind of hoping I'd get one or the other of you (but not both), to give whichever one it was extra bragging rights. lol. |

Stats: You have rated 518 of 530 images (98%) in this challenge.
(and the 2% were photos that I felt I shouldn't or couldn't rate for whatever reason).
For me, it took several short sessions to get through them all and, when I felt like it, I commented.
My feeling is that if you're going to vote and judge the photos that you need to evaluate them all (or as many as possible) - to be fair - even if you're voting each photo on its own merit. We all work hard to put the photos up there, why not give every entry what it deserves. Besides this whole process is a learning tool - I'm kind of assuming that's what we're all here for!
Looking at the photos is fun, especially the free study challenges because you never know what's on people's minds when they pick what they do. Think of it as a trip to a museum. ("I like it, I don't, I like it, I dont.... oh, this one's pretty.... wow - I could do that!".... see how much fun...)

Something to strive for. Time is a luxury for many people. 500+ photos can be incredibly daunting and time-consuming to vote on. Just don't fall into the trap of having a personal goal and idea for what is right for you and suggest that it should be common practice for all. We're all different people we all have different priorities, and we all have a million reasons for doing what we do.
In the end, the spread of voting on the images is pretty consistent, and nowhere near unfair or unbalanced, and I think that's what is truly important. |

I'm suddenly in danger of even losing my 5.5, and the last 10 or so votes have all been 5s, and I'm thinking that people are just 5'ing it to "get through all the photos". If so, that's just not right :) |

I wonder if people would prefer I spend 10 seconds on each photo, as some voters confess to doing, to vote on all 500, or I spend a minute on each of 20% of the photos? Thoughts? I have that amount of time tonight... |

I can tell you right now that I prefer 20% with some time spent thinking it through. |

I always vote on every image in any challenge that I vote in. This challenge with more than 500 entries requires a devotion of a lot of time to evaluate and vote on theses images. I don't believe that you can only give each image 10 seconds to decide your vote. I have taken many hours to go over all of these images over the course of several days to give what I feel are honest evaluations of each entry. If you feel you cannot devote the time needed to be fair to each entry, why vote at all? |
