Congrats Bob! That's an awesome catch. I can only imagine how it must have taken your breath away to see it in person.

I tried but they accepted it, I was ready for a reject but hoping for an accept...lol, currently one of the most popular for the day with 70 favs which is pretty cool.

You know, how are you ever gonna follow that one up? What do you do for an encore, when your first score is with a TORNADO?

It really was. It was kind of funny how it happened, the weather over our house was bright and clear but you could feel the cold air blowing around and the sky starting to darken so I looked out our back window a saw a smaller tornado and yelled to my wife that there was a tornado. Naturally I ran to get my camera came back and it was starting to fade but got some shots of it going back into the clouds and figured that was the end of the show. Then all of a sudden it started to come back down and got bigger and better than before. It was on the ground for about 20 minutes and never really moved more than about 100 yards so we just sat and watched and took photos.

Almost reminds me of a bad photography joke. "If a photographer sees a man drowning, what aperture does he use?" =)

I have my second submission on 1x.com currently in screening. We'll see. Its a different subject matter and something that's not commonly photographed so that might play into its favor.

For 1x...I'd go f 1.4. NO life preserver... low contrast B&W conversion, a little extra grain added.

Thanks Ursula, this shot is the one people always seem to like and gets people to react, it was really just dumb luck....lol

I'm working hard on a reject at the moment (lolol). It's one of my all time faves...we'll see what happens.

Another one of mine bites the dust. I'm 25% now, 2-for-8... I can't show it because it may be about to enter a challenge. Comments were strange. One of them said "It's a simple technique." What's that supposed to mean? Another one said it looks underexposed, "because the blacks aren't dark enough"... Wouldn't that be OVERexposure? Whatever. It's interesting watching the reactions, so far I'm only good with abstract-beaches-in-Truro-at-sunset-on-a-specific-day-in-April, a very limiting genre :-)

Often those comments come from people who are trying to say things in English when English is not their native language, or a language that they know sufficiently well to say what they mean.

Yeah, I know: I'm just being snarky :-) I'm happy enough with the way things are going. The latest reject is processed very similarly to the two that were accepted, and I'm actually relived it was rejected, because it's not something I want to be utterly typecast as, or not at this point anyway.

Go to your "account", click on "uploaded". Then click on any of your either published or not published images, and you'll see any comments left by member during the screening process. If there are no comments, for either published/not published images it can be either that the image was published/not published without member screening, or that nobody left a comment during the screening process.

I had one rejected yesterday that is being published in a magazine in France in July (part of a set of 5). Go figure. The hardest thing for me (and I think for many people) is to keep on working on what is meaningful and important to me regardless of "pressures to adapt/perform" from any site on the net.

Haha! That ain't my problem, thank goodness. I am just throwing stuff at them after-the-fact and seeing what sticks to the wall; kind of like spaghetti testing, ya know? I do what I do, regardless, and either it finds a home or it doesn't :-)

Ursula, you are as wise as you are beautiful. :-)

Thanks for the help, ursula and congrats on the publication! When you say, "part of a set of 5" - does this mean 5 pictures? What is the magazine?

You're welcome. Yes, a set of 5 pictures. It's not a photo magazine, so it's no biggie :)

Well..I am 0 for 2.

A version of this was fav'd twice here and twice on Flickr.

It was something different so I thought I would try it. It was probably too different and thus didn't resonate with the viewers. It did get to member screening so I guess it wasn't entirely awful.

I have submitted six photos to 1x, with 4 rejects and 2 published. The second was just published today. Six days of screening. Not a bad way to start the week.

From the Heart

Ironically I submitted this to the Family challenge as well and got DQ'd. I understand why, now.
